Bought a 99 Durango. Have questions

I picked this thing up for 200 bucks. It only shifts into 1st and 2nd. No reverse. Any ideas on whether I need a new trans or could it just be a solenoid or something?

They're all electronically controlled trans's and may haz a TCU issue

i asked if codes were set because ive seen a 3.9L dakota that only had first gear and it truned out to be some governor pressure sensor switch in the valve body.

but there was a slew of trans codes thrown.

Finally got this thing started. The battery was dead as fuck and I finally bought a new one.

Anyway....

It doesn't move in any gear. Just free revs. Reverse lights do come on. Parking pawl makes some noise when I put it back in park, so I know it is engaging/disengaging park.

It moves pretty easily when I push it, so the brakes aren't locked up. Would the trans bring up any lights on the dash?

Oh, VIN tells me its a 5.2 Liter.

Is it a 4x4? Transfer case in gear? The bushings in the transfer case linkage have been known to wear out.

It is a 4x4. Wouldn't the rear wheels still move?

I thought Chryslar products had to run a certan amount of time to throw codes. Back in the day people would stop down the block from the emissions test. disconnect the battry, then hook up and go pass.

Is it filled to the correct level? What does it look/smell like? Have you dropped the trans pan or pulled the inspection shield off and taken a peak at the converter and if it has fluid in it?

Trans problems are like cancer, even if it is a serviceable component that has failed (say an accessible sensor), other damage to the trans may have already been caused by the failure.

Fluid looked clean. Didn't feel like it had anything in it. I have not dropped the pan or looked at the converter.

I'm about to get shit on with snow (Northern New York), so I'll do that next week or the week after.

The transfer case has a neutral position as well. Try shifting it from 2Hi down to 4 hi and back see if it helps at all. Just saying cause when I went to test drive mine the dealer had it in neutral, was like wtf at first, lol.
