I had an 08 xterra. was a nice little suv for what it was.
good in the snow, VQ40 engine is a great little power plant as well. MPG was not great though, you can buy a full size SUV and get about the same mileage.
not so sure i'd buy one of the first gens, they seemed to have more issues.
My wife & I were looking at those last winter. We test drove both 2011/2012 models and I was impressed. The vehicle had good power, rode great, and was very roomy inside. It is not a luxury SUV by any means, but a very functional SUV. I liked it a lot and wanted it badly. It was not fancy enough for the wife.
My brother had an 02 or 03 for a few years and really liked it. We both agreed it felt underpowered at times, but it wasnt terrible. Decent MPG for what it is, and it was reliable for the time that he owned it. It was a beast in the snow too. I remember taking it out on the morning after that huge blizzard in 2010 and we were one of the only vehicles out on the road.
Im looking in the 10-15k range, I do want to get some of the brush gaurds and stuff to make it look nicer. I am glad to hear it is good in snow that why I really want it.
IDK mechanicallY much about them but IMO they can look awesome with tires, tiny lift, brush guards and even some of them that have roof racks. Also, I've seen a couple with snorkels and they look awesome as well, although that would probably be a bit more than you intend to do lol
Heard they are very solid rides, but surprisingly thirsty for the size. Early ones were known for being a bit under-powered.
I'd recommend looking at 4Runner's as well though, I was seeing really nice examples in a similar price range when I was truck shopping late last year.
If youre not looking for so much of a extreme 4x4 you could look into pathfinders. I have know a few people with them and they're always been good to them
