There's only so much testing that an automaker can undertake behind closed gates before the prototypes need to hit the open road. Consequently, automakers continue to devise all manner of camouflage and body cladding to keep prying eyes from seeing what they're working on. Horacio Pagani, however, seems to have a different approach. The independent Italian-Argentine purveyor of top-shelf supercars simply slaps the old bodywork on the new prototype and – presto! – nothing to see here. That is, until these shots came along.

Up until now, the prototypes for the Zonda's replacement that we've seen in spy shots have been all but completely indistinguishable from the existing model. But these shots – snapped in Johannesburg, South Africa – show entirely different bodywork around the rear end.

The big, protruding rear wing is gone, for starters. The tail-lamps, which were horizontal, rectangular units mounted low down on the existing Zonda, have been replaced by three-light clusters higher up. The squared-off mesh grille has been ditched in favor of an elliptical opening and the high-mounted barrel of exhaust tips, missing from recent prototypes, is back on this one. And that snorkel of an intake likewise protruding from previous prototypes is gone here, replaced by a more form-fitting vent behind the rear windscreen.

Unfortunately the snapper couldn't seem to get ahead to snap the front end, but the bodywork along the side flank appears more curvaceous as well, as does the greenhouse. The pair of test mules were apparently being escorted by a pair of Mercedes SLS AMGs, as the Benz performance division will once again be providing the Pagani's motivation.

awwwwwwwwww shit

Looks like the dyke's about to burst on the new Pagani C9, Horacio Pagani's cat-out-of-the-bag replacement for the legendary Zonda. Long story short, the Zonda is over ten years-old. The new C9 will be lighter, faster and sport better dynamics. Powering the new hypercar is a special, developed just for Pagani version of AMG's lovable 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12. In C9 trim this motor should belt out 700 horsepower. Yowza. Plus, it halfway looks like Michael Keaton's Batmobile.

A South African reader of ours caught the C9 mule in South Africa, snapped some pictures for your consumption and had the following to say:

I was driving from the OR Thambo International Airport (used to be called Johannesburg Intl) back home. This car carrier was standing next to the road, unattended. I don't know if you know, but a lot of high speed testing gets done in South Africa. One of our provinces (the Northern Cape) has parts that is part of the Kalahari desert with deserted straight blacktop for hundreds of kilometres on end. You get permission from the government (hence the yellow stickers) to drive as much as you'd like on the roads. The Porsche Panamera did round about 1600km in the Northern Cape last year. These pics were taken 14 February 2010.

Sounds fantastic to us, and should help shape the new breed of hyper exotics along with the McLaren MP4-12C.

The test driver of the twin-turbocharged Pagani C9 prototype hopefully learned something valuable about the car's performance in the seconds before the $1.3 million Italian exotic slammed into a wall outside Stuttgart.

This news may only truly affect the 0.0012% of the population able to afford or willing to buy the C9, but we're still pouring out some of our Earl Grey for the fallen AMG V12-powered super car set to replace the Pagani Zonda F.
