The DeLorean Motor Company is a brand without a car and the Pontiac Solstice is a car without a brand. That leaves the company wondering: if John DeLorean were still alive, would he try to save Pontiac? Or one Pontiac?

As we all know, the folding of both Pontiac and Saturn has left the small RWD platform without a home. It also left GM's Wilmington, Delaware plant without a purpose. The new DeLorean Motor Company, which we toured last summer, is currently the main keeper of the DeLorean flame and up-keeper of the world's fleet of DeLoreans. They're also producing a small series of upgraded second generation cars. Could they also carry forward the spirit of a company enriched by John DeLorean's vigor and genius?

"JZD always said that the best memories of his automotive career were at Pontiac, and that connection between JZD and Pontiac is probably one of the better known associations among car enthusiasts," said James Espey, Vice President of the DeLorean Motor Company.

The company has released the above drawings and acquired a Pontiac Solstice GXP Coupe for evaluation. DMC also says they're excited about the prospect of "putting several hundred people back to work" in Wilmington, though it's unclear at how much capital it would take to acquire the plant and the source of funding for such an endeavor.

Until we get more information we're just going to sit back and enjoy the prospect of GM's Kappa platform getting a second life.

That would be very interesting if it did happen.
I doubt it would though, GM didn't sell Pontiac to the investors that wanted it and the Saturn deal with Penske fell through.

Besides with the versitility of the chassis being able to install a V-8, DMC could make a V-8 Solstice that would compete directly with a Corvette and we all know GM won't let that happen.

The Solstice and the Sky were such good looking cars. Too bad they wouldnt fit into any of GMs brands now. Chevy cant have both a roadster and a base Camaro, they'll take sales away from each other.

How would a roadster and a base Camaro take away from each other?
The roadster (Solstice/Sky) attracts a different group of people than the muscle car image of the Camaro.

And before someone mentions it might take away from a Corvette, That is a wash as well. Most folks who buy a high powered sportscar like a Corvette are not going to buy a 4-cyl turbo roadster.

Oh im very aware that they are two different cars, but with them being similiarly priced and both "sport" related, I can see someone debating over a base solstice and a base camaro simply because they're both sporty cars. Those that buy the base model pony cars are just looking for a sporty car to cruise in and are not interested in the power it puts out.

Now someone looking to get a Camaro SS, no, the Solstice wouldnt effect those sales at all IMO. Thats a different car buyer right there, but that car buyer doesnt make up the majority of sales like the base models do.
