Viva la revolution! After years of looking at spy photos, renderings and concept versions &mdash the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 is here, for real. Powered by the 6.1-liter HEMI V8, this HEMI orange muscle car puts out 425 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque. for a total of 69.8 horsepower per liter. How fast is it? Good question. The performance "targets" were a 0-60 mph time in the low fives, a quarter-mile in less than 14 seconds, at least 0.88 g's on the skidpad and a 60-0 mph stopping time of about 110 feet. However, you -- like us -- are waiting to see the actual performance numbers to see how close they got to the targets. To make the SRT8 trackworthy, engineers employed a multilink short and long arm suspension up front. In the back, the Challenger sports a five-link independent suspension with multiple bushings, allowing it to be tuned for ride or comfort. It's your choice of tires on the forged aluminum 20-inch wheels that will be keeping the 4,140-lb monster on the track. Keeping the Challenger out of the ditch is the job of the red, four-piston Brembo calipers. Drivers of the first batch of SRT8's will be controlling that power with a five-speed AutoStick, which might make some a little unhappy. More details should emerge Wednesday morning.

I love the way it looks. I just wish they would have gone more nostalgic with the interior. It looks like two different cars; the interior could be out of any one of Chrysler's big sedans.

As for the powertrain, I'm a huge fan of the current SRT8s. The 6.1-liter and five-speed auto work really well together in the sedans or the Magnum, but I'd like to see a six-speed manual for something that's supposed to be a sporty throwback like the Challenger.

4100 lbs??? sure looks like their keeping it nostalgic...

lol

i got a buddy that works for benz and he told me its the only place where they actually stock transmission parts due to how much they fail - so i think i might beat on the srt-8s a little too much for that tranny - but then again i havent heard a whole lot about it being an issue + im sure most issues have been warranteed

That's what I'm curious about. Now that MB isn't affiliated with Chrysler anymore, what happens for parts? I hope they have a stockpile somewhere, or at least Daimler still has some strings attached.

Since Chryslers main supplier of plastic parts just went belly up, I'm wondering where they're getting/keeping their supplies as well.

Considering about 98 percent of their interiors are made from plastic ... sucks for them. Maybe they can find a supplier with less crappy products. Then they might finally have a tolerable interior.

Agreed. They already shut down a number of plants because of the lack of inventory to build the cars, including the Belvidere plant. I guess it could be a "blessing in disguise," however...since the plants I've heard that were closing made the cars that Chrysler was going to Axe anyway.

Maybe they made it heavy, and make it easy to remove weight from too.

In this day and age, it's retarded to have a 4100Lb sporty coupe. With all the lightweight materials available, etc. Just think of how this car would performed at 3500lbs! Maybe Chrysler is sandbagging....literally.

  • Charger SRT8: 4,160 pounds
  • 300C SRT8: 4,046 pounds
  • Magnum SRT8: 4,260 pounds
  • Ford Taurus X (just for fun. It's a three-row crossover SUV): 4,112 pounds

Yeah, that about sums it up.
