jari matti latvala has just been promoted to the big boy team on ford to be #2 driver to mikko hirvonen, who was bumped into gronholms spot after his retirement!

Ford on Sunday evening confirmed that Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila are to join Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen in the BP Ford team next season as has been rumoured for some months.

The retirement from the team of Marcus Grönholm and Timo Rautiainen, who have led its campaign in superb fashion over the past two seasons, has posed quite a challenge the team stated. However, Ford's WRC strategy has been based also on a programme to develop new, exciting talent.

Fresh from their win in the final WRC event this month, in Rally GB, Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen now are stepping up into the role vacated by Grönholm and Rautiainen.

Further, Ford announced that Latvala and Anttila will also be promoted, as their team-mates, to complete Ford's official line-up for 2008.

Lewis Booth, Vice Chairman for Ford of Europe
"The man who so convincingly kept the BP-Ford team at the top of the leader board throughout the year is Marcus Grönholm. We couldn't have won 'two in a row' without Marcus and Timo delivering results so consistently. We're really fortunate to have had them both on the team, and we're proud of what they have achieved for Ford. Marcus and Timo have been one of the sport's most successful pairings of all time - in fact their 30 victories have earned Marcus second place on the list for all-time rally wins. Such is Marcus' standing in the sport that we did not want to lose him entirely from our team. We are asking Marcus to take an ambassadorial role for Ford of Europe next year."

Ian Slater, Vice President Communications of Ford of Europe
"Ford of Europe is planning for a long-term success in the WRC. Our young but experienced team, with Mikko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala, is a clear statement of intent. We believe these two young Finns will become stars of the sport and we're delighted to offer them the opportunity to grow and develop with Ford over the next few season, while providing all-important stability and consistency within the team."

"Jari-Matti is only 22, but already he has started more than 50 WRC events and his level of experience is higher than many older drivers. He has developed greatly under Malcolm's guidance in a privately-entered Focus RS World Rally Car during the past two seasons. Towards the end of the 2007 season Jari-Matti has shown he is ready to step up to a full works drive: witness his outstanding third place in Rally Ireland last month. They will debut for us in January's Monte Carlo Rally."

Malcolm Wilson, M-Sport MD
"First of all I'd like to thank Ford for the trust and confidence. I also would like to thank Stobart for their commitment to run Jari-Matti this year. He has gained confidence by the day and has developed into the most promising driver in the WRC this season. His performances on the second half of the season put him in pole position for the drive. Knowing that he will now be doing a large part of the testing, gives me confidence that his performance will only improve."

"Marcus and Mikko have worked wonderfully together and I hope that Mikko will pass on to Jari-Matti the experience he has learned. If I look back, I'm proud to say that they both came to M-Sport for evaluation five years ago and now they are going to be partnered for the 2008 season."

Fords gonna be the team to beat next year. sure citroen has loeb, but unless sordo can do a little better job of backing him up this year loeb will have a hard time carrying the team himself....at least for constructors points...

more of next years lineup:

With the Ford and Suzuki world rally teams having announced their drivers, and no scheduled changes at Citroën, the big picture is moving into focus regarding the main 2008 contenders.

On the other hand, nothing is official yet with the satellite outfits. One month away from the Monte Carlo debut to the season, there is much speculation added to what is already known.

Citroën Sport
Sébastien Loeb, four-time World Champion and Citroën team spearhead, will once again be racing for the French manufacturer. Spaniard Dani Sordo will be joining him as teammate once again, thereby adding stability to the line-up.

Rumour has it that a B team could be set up, also equipped with C4 cars. If such were the case, that does not necessarily mean that the satellite organisation would be challenging for the Constructors' Championship. Two names have been mentioned in connection with these C4s: Zimbabwean Conrad Rautenbach and Estonian Urmo Aava.

Ford World Rally Team
Mikko Hirvonen has officially been named Number One driver for the Ford team, in replacement of retiree Marcus Grönholm. Aboard the second Focus RS WRC will be another Finn, as Jari-Matti Latvala transfers from the Stobart team to become Hirvonen's teammate. As was the case this year, a third car will be entered for Khalid Al Qassimi of Qatar.

Subaru World Rally Team
All aboard for another round: Petter Solberg and Chris Atkinson return in 2008 for the Japanese team. The Norwegian and the Australian will be joined once again by Xevi Pons of Spain at the wheel of a third works Subaru Impreza. The big news for Subaru will be the launching of the totally new Impreza WRC during the course of the season.

Suzuki Motorsport
After two appearances during the 2007 season (with Nicolas Bernardi in Corsica and Sebastian Lindholm in Great Britain), the Suzuki team SX4 WRC car will be participating in every round of the 2008 campaign. Finn driver Toni Gardemeister and Swede double Junior Champion Per-Gunnar Andersson will be doing their best for the team.

Stobart and Munchi's
Things have not been completely finalized yet for the two satellite Ford teams. Jari-Matti Latvala has left Stobart to join the official Ford crew, while Matthew Wilson should again embark on a full season engagement. Henning Solberg is also expected to return with Stobart, but nothing official has yet been declared concerning the Norwegian.

Federico Villagra should be back with Munchi's Ford, although not for all of the 15 rounds indicated on the 2008 season calendar. Fellow Argentinian Luis Perez Companc should have a lighter program of four or five events.

Kronos Racing
Following the departure of main sponsor OMV, odds are that the Kronos Racing team will not participate in the 2008 WRC season. Marc Van Dalen's outfit will most probably concentrate on the Intercontinental Rally Challenge where, in cooperation with BFGoodrich, it will be employing the services of several drivers within the BFGoodrich Drivers Team programme.

Manfred Stohl might be present at a few world rally races, albeit within the Production Car championship.
