We love this time of year. Around the time of the SEMA show is when a bunch of new products are introduced. We just got a press release from ProCharger describing their new i-1 Programmable Ratio Supercharger. Within its housing is a variable ratio drive belt that varies the amount of "step-up" directed to the impeller wheel from the crank-driven belt. It works like a CV transmission and will be able to provide much more boost at lower rpm that would be allowed by a fixed ratio impeller drive.
This technology could bridge the divide that has long existed between centrifugal and roots/twin screw type superchargers. The latter generally provide more boost at lower rpm, but tend to become less efficient at higher engine speeds, while the opposite is true for centrifugal superchargers.
A variable-speed impeller drive can offer the best of both worlds, spinning the impeller at a high ratio at low engine rpm , delivering the low rpm grunt of a Roots supercharger, while still generating efficient boost at high engine speeds. Click on the YouTube link above to see ProCharger's animation of how it works. Want to see it on an engine? We are itching to get our hands on one to test.

fucking cool shit.
The totally new 2013 Honda Accord has just now started trickling into dealerships across the country, but here at SEMA, we're already getting our first look at what the future has in store for Honda's midsize offering. Arriving in Honda showrooms next spring is this limited-edition HFP performance edition of the 2013 Accord Coupe, and although no power upgrades are on tap, there's some extra kit that will indeed make things more interesting out on the road.
Honda's HFP upgrades start with visual add-ons like 19-inch alloy wheels and a rear decklid spoiler, and further changes are found underneath that sheetmetal with the addition of a unique sport suspension that lowers the car by 15 millimeters and enhances overall handling. Of course, no sporty Accord would be complete without the necessary body enhancements to the front fascia, side sills and rear bumper, and don't worry, there will be plenty of HFP badges on both the exterior and interior.
Speaking of interior, the Accord HFP will have red illumination found throughout the cabin as well as – wait for it – specially branded floor mats.
The HFP package is only available on Accord Coupe models fitted with the 3.5-liter V6 engine, good for 278 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque. We've already had a chance to drive a two-door Accord with this engine, and it's seriously good. The HFP add-ons should make this a truly sweet package.
Only 500 of the Accord Coupe HFP models will be produced, and the whole package will be offered as a $4,650 option package, not including the cost of installation. Scroll down for the full details in Honda's press release.

For those who love to go as fast as possible in as straight a line as possible, but have a wife, two kids and family pet, Toyota has built the DragQuoia just for you. Well, except for the family pet part.
With four seats (plus racing harnesses, naturally), a 650-horsepower TRD supercharged V8 engine and 21.5-inch racing slicks, this drag-racing Sequoia thing can reportedly cover the quarter mile in as little as nine seconds. It's so absurd that it's glorious.
In addition to the racing harnesses, there's a full roll cage and a parachute to bring things back down from speed. Safety first, family man. Read more about the DragQuoia in the press release below and enjoy our live photo gallery above.
One of the greatest aspects of the SEMA show is the freedom it gives automakers and tuners to play around a little. Where other shows' bread and butter are more serious conceptual pieces or production-bound unveils, cars at SEMA are very often flights of fancy that are really only intended to bring some excitement to a model or brand.
Case in point is Chevrolet's Malibu Turbo Performance Concept, which, while not offering added performance over the standard 2.0 turbo's 259 horsepower, does look a lot more interesting than the standard model. A super-aggressive ground effects package, concept-specific blue paint, unique badges, dashes of red accent work and a lot of what's called "black-ice tinted chrome" all help to make this a Malibu that you won't forget.
