We can now add a rendering and a litte more gossip to General Motors and its recent patenting of the of the "SS" designation. GM has used the SS designator for more than 50 years but only got around to trademarking it five years ago, and persistent rumors have suggested that a civilian version of the Chevrolet Caprice PPV will simply be called the SS.

Chevrolet previously confirmed that its next NASCAR entry will be both a new vehicle and new nameplate, which suggests that the Malibu and Impala are disqualified. But a new car called the SS would fit, and the rumormill suggests it will be a derivative of the Zeta-platform Holden Commodore. The folks at Chris Doane Automotive have opened the rendering account and taken this rather conservative stab at what a reboot of a U.S. Commodore might look like.

Yes, we've been here before, and in fact, we're still here. The now extinct but universally lauded Pontiac G8 was itself a Americanized Holden Commodore, and the current Caprice law enforcement vehicle is a long-wheelbase version of that Holden that packs either a 3.6-liter, 301-horsepower V6 or a 6.0-liter, 355-hp V8. Resurrecting the G8 would return a vehicle that many loved but was handicapped by Pontiac's zombie status, improve Holden's fortunes and give Chevy a proper rear-wheel drive sedan with teeth. To all of that, we say Yes, Yes and... Yes.

Why? the car has a great heritige in NASCAR. And they still use the name abroad.

Who gives a shit if it does well abroad? 99.9% of people don't know that a Lumina in Europe was the GTO in America was the Monaro in Australia.

The Lumina here, to the average mouth breathing retard, was a car they brought to Cash for Clunkers for their Obama bucks for a newer plastic death trap that got "ok" mileage.

It may not be the best choice but the lumina was around here for 11 years, and sold very well(although most have rusted away or have had their demise in ghettos across the country.)

And oh they never met qualifications for C4C :wavey:

I love this car, don't get me wrong. It's a great platform.

What really bothers me is this :

Resurrecting the G8 would return a vehicle that many loved but was handicapped by Pontiac's zombie status, improve Holden's fortunes and give Chevy a proper rear-wheel drive sedan with teeth.

GM could lower the overall cost of producing this car and thereby lower the cost of the car overall if they would do one thing :

Build a plant here, stateside to produce these cars.

By doing that you'd eliminate the cost of importing and shipping, and you'd support our economy with more jobs being made for people who are out of work.

Just my two cents.

Not to mention "Chevy Lumina" basically became a well-known household name anyways since there were so many. There was a time you couldn't go a mile without seeing at least four to five of the cars. They were comfortable, fuel efficient, and good looking cars (purely opinion on the last one.)

The middle east gets these.

That car would sell like hot cakes here.

They could sell it alongside the new Impala, and the new Caprice/SS.

They could develop more powerful, more efficient engines for them..

GM has seen the light in bringing some of these cars over because there is a demand but the sales expectations aren't going to match what the General thinks it's capable of. It's a niche car. The G8 / Lumina / Commodore fits in the better everyday car category and that's why they would sell much better.

But yet Pontiac still out sold Buick and Cadilliac when GM dropped Pontiac

They wanted to can Buick but Buick is huge in China so Pontiac got the axe.

I don't think Pontiacs were regarded as being shit either. The Grand Prix always received praise for what it was, the G6 as well.

The G8 was pretty inexpensive as well. $30,000 for that car new was a steal.

The G8's problem was that it was a little too boy racer. It's was targeted to a very specific demographic. It was also already stale in the looks department. Same goes for the GTO and the Lumina pictured earlier in this post.
