So i was gonna buy some new/more ram for my computer, but first I need to know what kind I have.

How can I tell does it say?
I dont wanna tear into my computer and then have no clue.

Also I know I have 2 slots (or whatever they're called) so can I just pull out what I have in there and throw in 2 new ones, or do I have to leave the current one in, I really have NO idea how this works.

thanks

Did you have the computer built or was it a pre-built unit?

If you had it built, see if you still have the book to the motherboard. That can tell you.

If it was pre-built, they can tell you at the store.

I just went to Fry's last night over by you and picked up another 512 MB for a total of 1 GB. It's so much faster now! :D

ok so i pulled out the manual and the box for the mobo.

The box says: 2x DDR226 SDRAM & 2 x PC133 slots
Manual: 2 slots for DDR: DIMM1 and DIMM2 (PC1600/PC2100), Max 2GB
2 slots for SDR: DIMM3 and DIMM4 (PC100/PC133), Max 2 GB

Did a little looking on newegg, maybe i'll check ebay, I'm not looking to spend a ton, this comp is like 3 years old so i'd rather not dump a ton into it, however I was wondering this:

the manual says CPU: Socket 478 for Intel Pentium 4 / Celeron processor
Chipsets: North Bridge VIA P4M266A, FSB @ 533MHZ

So I was wondering about how hard swapping processors is.
I found a few different possibilities on newegg.
My current processor is a shitty 2.4 ghz celeron

So I'm assuming I cant use a processor with a FSB of 800 right?

Anyway so I had the choice left up between these two.

I was gonna buy a new computer, but decided against it, if I can just upgrade my computer I ahve now for a couple hundred so it runs my recording software better I'd be happy.

thanks guys i appreciate the help i really do. :)

from what you're saying as far as ram specs go, you can use either of the 2 sets of slots, not both. Go with the DDR 266/PC 2100 .... overall its still quite slow, but not much you can do on that front.

as for the processor, go for the p4 you have in the link... while it is just a tad slower in overall mhz, the L2cache is 2x the size, that you will notice more.

so if you were to do 1gb ram and the processor, you'd be at about 150, which isnt too too bad, but you could likely build a new system and re-use your curent drives/case for probably under 400... depending on what you want in it.
