They were in money troubles...and from what I have seen, performance vehicles have a tendancy of boosting overall company sales. So people might not directly buy the GT500 but knowing that Ford can make an incredible car like that make's people more inclined to buy a Focus, 500, Crown Vics, and so on....take away all the performance excitement and what do you have? General Motors?? Yeah, something along those lines.
