Story Time v.the sky is blowing up

So I'm driving along Mulholland Drive just a bit ago. If you don't know Mulholland, you actually do. It's really popular with auto journalists as it runs along the top of the Hollywood Hills and gives you views of the LA basin and Hollywood on one side and views of the valley on the other side. Additionally, you get great views of the sky.

So I'm driving along just now and I see a light in the sky that I thought was an airplane, only this airplane has a streak of fire trailing it. That's generally not good. It appeared to be launched from Los Angeles and traveling up into the sky over the hill I was on. As the trail of fire disappeared, I pull off the road and I'm still watching it go through the sky. At this point it simply looks like a plane and I wouldn't have watched it had I not just seen the trail of fire.

So now I'm trying to figure out if it's maybe a rocket someone shot off. As I'm rolling through the possibilities in my head the thing basically slows to a stop in the sky and starts shooting out smoke. Let me reiterate: it was not shooting through the sky at the point it started blowing out smoke. So now I'm freaking out. Are we being gassed?

As I watch this, the fucking thing explodes in slow motion. And when I say slow motion imagine one of those giant pretty fireworks that takes up the entire sky in front of you. Now imagine that it smoothly explodes to full size in 15 seconds. This fucker lit up the entire half of the sky and didn't disappear. It looked as if there was a stationary chunk of daylight in the sky and it was huge. As it finally dissipated, you could see a blue line of glowing light appear and it was luminescent. There was no light source shining on it. Meanwhile, the object all of this appeared to have come from is still just sitting in the sky, not moving.

What in the everliving fuck did I just witness? I'm not going to lie, I was wondering if it was a terrorist thing and they were gassing Los Angeles. I raced the 5 minutes back home, quickly closed all the windows and promptly freaked out my wife. After looking on the internet I realized that this was so much bigger than it appeared to me. I thought it was floating over the Hollywood Hills and Beverly Hills. After looking on Twitter I realize people as far north as San Francisco saw it and people as far east as Phoenix.

My brain wants to say meteorite but it was slow and meteorites don't just stop in the sky, do they? Also, this wasn't coming at me on a downward trajectory. It flew through the sky horizontally.

Here's a picture. It might appear in this picture as if it's moving. It's not. It's parked.

That's an odd story altogether. Planes always land from the east and take off over the ocean. The only time they land from the west over the ocean is when we have Santa Ana winds.

Apparently the Navy is taking responsibility. Nobody knows why though.

A trident missile launch...

Here is a youtube link to an Atlas launch with the same atmospheric phenomena...I believe the explanation being that once the rocket reaches the horizon, and can be illuminated by the sun over the horizon, it creates the phenomena...

EDIT: Reading a different article, the one in LA was a trident launch...no attachment...

Here is a link, from a month ago, to the military comms satellite that was launched near Miami, with the same phenomena
