thinking around end of May- anyone have any first hand experience with something in around the 1,000 mile driving range from the area?

so far been looking at around myrtle beach, gulf shores alabama, florida panhandle, NC beach towns, etc etc.

I want to be able to go in the ocean (aka warm enough weather and water)

thinking of renting a house off of HomeAway: Vacation Rentals, Beach Houses, Cabins & More and doing a week for ~$1500 or so.

warm water, nice beach, around 1000 miles, decent area, etc. and go.

Myrtle Beach. I was there with the family two years ago for memorial day weekend. It was 90 and sunny every day and the beaches/boardwalk are dope. We are going again this memorial day most likely. There are like 40 oceanside hotels on the coast near the town center/boardwalk, and they are cheap. We booked ours for $111 a night for 5/25-5/30/15.

Over the past two summers, we've done:
  • Jersey shore - it was OK, definitely not a place I'd stay for more than 2-3 days
  • Myrtle Beach - spent 5 days on the beach, was awesome. clean beaches, plenty of stuff to do when not at the beach
  • Hilton Head - fantastic beaches and restaurants. good place to just relax and unwind.

Will be there for 10 days end of June this year.

+1gazillion on Hilton Head. Would go back 100 times and still be happy. Fantastic food, beaches were awesome and it was sooo relaxed.

Tybee Island. The wife and I went there two years ago around spring break and it is a chill beach town. Savannah isn't too far away for good eating, and there are a few nice places on Tybee: Sundae Cafe and Gerald's Pig and Shrimp. Long white sandy beaches and affordable beach-front condos for rent.

Fuck heading south. Wellfleet, MA on Cape Cod is 1,074 miles from Chicago. I've spent a lot of time on the Cape as a kid and am really itching to bring the family when the kids are old enough. Very peaceful & beautiful beaches and great food. Highly recommend the Cape.

We spent a day on Tybee last year, as we were staying in nearby Savannah.
The beach was great, and we didn't really venture out much.. but it didn't seem like there was much else to do there.
