Well, I'm almost over my bout with Pneumonia so I can get back on this again...

Gotta hurry up and freshen this thing up, looks like it may snow next week...

Let Patrick know if you want some help. He's work is slow as hell so he has way to much free time.

Why aren't you tossing in a cam or something?

My old setup (with the baby blower at 8psi) was:
ProForm 1.6 Roller Rockers
CompCams XE264HR cam
CompCams Valve springs
CompCams Retainers
CompCams cam gear/chain
CompCams Roller Lifters

http://www.thechicagogarage.com/foru...-thread-6.html

Never got it Dynoed with EVERYTHING done sadly, but it hauled the mail nicely, would probably have scraped 12's with a real tune.

There is an issue with running an overly aggressive cam with the OBD2 5.0 ECU, (I think 116LSA was the 'max' it could deal with sans serious idle issues).

I still have a set of new retainers hanging out, so I may piece something together (Springs at the least since stockers are crap), but at the end of the day I plan on USING this thing as a truck more immediately and don't really care about big numbers.

My train of thought is once I've put some miles under the belt of this build I'll pickup another motor and work on getting a M112 kit or Turbo kit designed for it so I can re-sell it and use this truck as a Mule.

I've blasted through most the easy 'busy' work stuff parting the explorer and pulling the ranger. The next 'phase' may be sanding/blasting down the motor bay once the motor is freshened up, but that is absolute 'bitch' work to be honest

REALLY noob question; since my motor is already a hydro roller cam motor, cant I just slap another roller cam into this engine and re-use the factory lifters and push rods....? if that's the case, maybe I will just buy the CompCam and springs while its out of the truck.

I don't see why they wouldn't make a hot cam that just uses factory parts, sans the valve springs.

Yes you can easily swap just the camshaft the issue is whether or not the needle bearings on the lifters are damaged or worn out.

You should be able to figure out if you can just slap in the cam itself when you do the tear down and inspection.

what would be a give-away on if they are bad or not?

Ford really sold very little/no 'hot' parts for the 96-01 5.0 Small Block.

The 'Letter' cams don't really place nice with the OBD2 ECU programming, I think I can get away with the B303 from what I've read, but even then I may have idle issues until I get a real tune.

If anyone is bored on Sunday; I will be cranking on this thing probably a good portion of the day (Especially now that I have a heater) and could always use some help. Feel free to drop by and/or lend a hand and/or drink beer.

I took Monday and Tuesday off this week to work on the truck as a whole, and plan on working on the engine the better part of tomorrow.

Perfect world, by EOD Monday I'll have motor 'fresh', mated to the transmission, and just kind of hanging out on the floor on the crane waiting to get stabbed.

I'd like to spend Tuesday working on cleaning down the motor bay, dis-assembling the front suspension, POR-15 the front frame, etc, etc, etc.

I'm going to need to make multiple stab attempts because I'm working on an swap kit that may supersede the old 'stepped' design to be more efficient for manufacturing. @Turbocharged400sbc, are you free after work Monday or Tuesday to help me measure things? I'd happily bribe you for your time either through a meal or money, let me know.

Also, any way you can make the stepped set Monday or Tuesday and bring it with so we can use it for measuring??? Pretty please?
@EmersonHart13 if your bored you should come help

If I didn't spend the 'whole day' under the Montero doing diffs, tc and trans fluid/filter I would have.

But that was a priority as I was getting a shudder.

Don't worry, fluids were spilled on all 4 drains and fills.

And since that thing leaks oil, some that hit the floor too. Although nothing like your quantity of fluid....
