In the last year I tried out both the GTX 970 and the R9 390. On paper the 390 is a better card since it has double the RAM. (8GB vs 4GB). In reality though the 390 was marginally, if at all better than the 970. Neither card could play GTAV maxed out with AA on at 2k resolution.

Another thing that surprised me is the 390 was physically bigger and had alot more heatsink mass. I actually had to remove my HDD and SSD to get it to fit in the case. I guess radeon stuff isn't as efficient heat wise.

Personally I think all AMD stuff has gone downhill in the last 5 years. I'd stick with Nvidia. Two older Reasons in Xfire are gonna put out alot of heat!

Good info on comparing the 970 to the 390. I've been looking at both of those.

Yea I think the pair of 290x's would really fill up my case. It's not crazy full but they'd be on top of each other.

Im sure you know this, but 2-290x's would DESTROY a single 970. That being said, AMD drivers (crimson) SUCK BALLS. I just was using a 390x on my newest X99 build I have going right now, and I had nothing but issues with several of my newest games. The card sounds great on paper, but the drivers just let it down. So I bit the bullet and swapped it out for a 980ti, and all my driver woes disappeared. Now lets compound those AMD driver issues, with Crossfire support. Thats even more sketchy.

In closing(lol), I'd go single cheapest 970. And if you add a second 970, that would make it a more powerful gaming rig than the same one with a single 980ti.

Not to mention, once DX12 fully rolls out in games, SLI/CF support will be nonexistent. The multigpu option will allow you to stack the GPUs together/combining their VRAM and power, without needing to rely on an SLI profile. This is HUGE. Hell, you could skip another 970 and get a fury or something else.

It's AROUND $300.....
That's not bad at all.

EBAY?

I think ill eventually go dual 970s. Just gotta decide on a case since i dont want to use my Full Tower. Thinking i might build something that mounts under the desk upside down

Yea eBay. Missed out on a few 970 auctions last night and got fed up.

There's a evga 970 ssc on Amazon warehouse deals for $288. Was really really close to buying it when I found the 980
