Creator of Mystery Science Theater 3000 Starts Kickstarter Campaign to #BringBackMST3K :: Comedy :: News :: Paste

In a not-too-distant future, you could be watching brand-new episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Joel Hodgson, the creator and original host of MST3K, has turned to Kickstarter to campaign for a new season of the cult-classic movie-riffing series. Returning to the line-up are the original bots, Tom Servo and Crow, to mock and joke through each unbearable film.

The asking price? $2 million is the initial goal, which will allow the team to shoot three brand new episodes of MST3K. Each additional $1.1 million after that will allow them to shoot another three episodes, up to 12 episodes.

The goal of all this isn’t just to bring Mystery Science Theater 3000 back for a single run, however, but to prove to the world that fans want the show back in the hopes of getting picked up by another network. In the Kickstarter campaign pitch, Hodgson writes:

If we want a lot more MST3K, we need to work together to prove that there’s still an audience out there that wants MST3K – and that this isn’t all some pitiable delusion – so that we can find a network or online platform who will agree to pick up the show and keep it going… hopefully for another 200+ episodes.

There’s no word yet if Tom Servo and Crow’s original voice actors will reprise their roles, though Hodgson confirmed on Kickstarter that there will be one new host and one new “Mad” to torture the spacefaring movie-goers. Questions will no doubt swirl for some time on the involvement of key figures from MST3k, from Bill Corbett, Kevin Murphy, Mary Jo Pehl and Trace Beaulieu to second host Mike Nelson. Also: Who is this new host going to be? If Joel had his choice, serving in an executive producer role, who would he pick as the new face of the franchise?

If you’d like to back, you can head to the Kickstarter page, where pledges are already nearing six digits. The backer tiers range anywhere from a download of the first episode to (if you’ve got the coin) owning your very own Tom Servo, straight from the set of one of the new episodes.

If the Kickstarter project hits Hodgson’s initial $2 million goal, he’ll immediately go into production on three new episodes. But that number will double with every additional $1.1 million raised, and if they cross $5.5 million, fans will be able to enjoy 12 episodes’ worth of the funniest bad movie commentary around.

And did we mention all the rewards?

Donors at the $100 level will score digital downloads of the new season;

those who donate $500 will receive a personalized video greeting;

while the generous individuals who pledge $10,000 can count on receiving authentic production puppets of wisecracking robots Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot, plus a VIP set visit while new episodes are being shot.

WHALE WHALE WHALE

In the not-too distant future (April 14th, 2017 AD), a brand-new season of crowdfunded Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes will hit Netflix. Before then, however, 20 classic episodes of the show have been added to the streaming service globally both to whet appetites and create new fans of the cult classic. The episodes include fan favorites as Manos: The Hands of Fate, Time Chasers and Space Mutiny.

Felicia Day is one of the hosts, too. Besides having acted in various TV series (Buffy, Dollhouse, Eureka, etc), she owns Geek and Sundry, a youtube tv network that plays geek web shows including Wil Wheaton's Tabletop.
