So for anyone interested, I drive a fairly well optioned 2015 Crew Cab w/ 6.5 Ford F-150. It's currently in for service and I got a 2016 XL SuperCab as a loaner. It's a 4x4, same as mine. I will highlight some of the differences between a $52k MSRP truck and a $37k MSRP truck below.

This is equipped with a 3.5L NA V6, making 283hp and 255lb-ft of torque. While not something I'd want to tow more than a small utility trailer with (rated for 7,200lbs from Ford), this engine is actually very nice to drive around town, but I'm thinking it has something to do with the 3.73 rear end ratio (for reference, my EcoBoost has 3.55s). It honestly feels as powerful as the previous 4.6L 3v in the 2009 & 2010 models, just with much better fuel economy. On my drive in from the Frankfort Ford dealership to my office in Oak Brook I returned 21.5mpg over 28.5miles, none of which were highway.

Some of the oddities I noticed were the flip-down center console/seat-back doesn't have a storage compartment like XLT's/Lariat's do. Very strange to me that they'd manufacture two different versions of this. The other strange thing is the lack of an overhead console, leaving just a pair of map lights and a grate for the SYNC microphone. My guess is it has something to do with the higher-end alarm system, some sort of interior motion sensors, and the switch for my Lariat's sliding rear window.

Surprises for an XL with the "Power Equipment Pkg" are that it has a electronic parking brake, auto-headlamps, tow/haul mode & sport mode trans shifting, stability control, trailer sway control, SYNC, cruise control & a power tailgate lock. The other cool thing, after spending some time with Blinkstang's 2010 SuperCab, is the new 15+ SuperCab's rear doors now open 170 degrees compared to last gen's 90ish. Really nifty if you ask me.

All-in-all, I'm not mad about it. It'd make a perfect DD if you just wanted a pickup for the cab size, tossing big items in the bed and the ability to do some work off-road or in bad weather & snowstorms. I'll toss some pics in below, feel free to ask any questions.

I also had one as a loaner while the wastegate actuator was getting replaced on my F350. The N/A V6 was a great motor if you ask me, and the amount of stuff you can throw at one of these XL's now is rather impressive. I put about 1,000 miles on my loaner and had zero complaints with it. Would definitely consider a new F150 (was my first time at the helm of one, unlike you) if I ever got back to a point of not needing a diesel.

Considering you can get this thing for probably under 30k OTD, it's a whole lot of truck with solid MPG & capability. 1,700lbs of Payload is a nice time and the shorter 145" wheelbase (compared to my 157") is much more maneuverable. I will add this is the "XL Sport Appearance Pkg" so it has considerably less black plasticy-ness on the outside (around the headlights & whatnot). This is how I would buy an XL.

ps, vinyl flooring is actually kinda neat.

I was actually mostly impressed with the engine as well. I wanted to tow something with it, but didn't have any trailers on hand. If I would've had it another few days it would've gone to Hayward with a trailer which was something I was greatly looking forward to. I think it would tow an open trailer with a car to the track with ease, it felt a lot peppier than my 5.3 trucks with a 4-speed auto.

I'd take those 180* doors in a heartbeat, that is sweet.

Not a fan of the electric parking brake but then again most trucks today have electronic on-the-fly 4x4 and that seems to work just fine.

Nice write up. I've always wondered what all those small things that you don't think about are that you lose when going down the package line. IE, Lariat vs XLT vs XL.

By this point, if you own and are happy with a "well equipped" truck from 2005, you can pretty much step into a base model and be wow'd with options

To me, leather is the one thing I like in vehicles, however I can't buy a damn thing with it without paying up for a loaded truck.

If I was trying to buy a new truck as cheaply as possible, I'd buy a new F150 XL sport like what Dan was driving, add a touchscreen head unit and have heated leather installed. Figure you're in $2,500 for all of that. If you can buy the truck just over $30,000 with the 2.7 EcoBoost that's a damn nice vehicle for the money.

The cloth in this XL is actually really, really nice. I don't mind it one bit, just much prefer a black interior & ball warmers/chillers. The stereo isn't half-bad, bass can get buzzy at times. The e-parking brake is only on certain models, trucks with HD payload or max towing packages will get a fully manual one (such as my Lariat).

I need more seat time with a 2.7EcoBoost in this trim. I think it would kick major ass, and make it even more enjoyable. I've only taken a quick test drive of a 2.7 but thought it was super responsive and damn quick.

and since this trans is the same as my 3.5EB I'll say the 6R80 is a DAMN GOOD transmission all around. Interested in seeing how the new 10R80 is

My only grievance is the amount of coin new trucks fetch for nowadays with how cheap they look inside and out on the lower models. That loaner you said goes for what 37k sticker? And the entire dash is a giant piece of plastic with a tiny 6 inch looking screen. Not until you get into the much higher ranges of truck does it start to look worth the money.

I don't own a truck and I am not in the market but my father in law was last year when he bought his GMC. Just gave me sticker shock what a "work truck" now retails for MSRP
