98 Ranger, no start, no crank, no click

My dad just called me because he was stuck at a gas station and his truck will not start. He said that it has been an intermittent issue where he tries to start the truck and nothing happens. No cranking, no clicking noise nothing. Then it will start usually on the second try. I guess he was stuck at the gas station for about 20 min before the truck started. Usually when the starter needs to be replace the solenoid will still make a click noise.

This is a 1998 Ranger 4 cylinder truck, piece of junk.

Battery is good

So could it be ignition switch, relay, dirty connection, bad starter?

I know fords are notorious for bad starter relays

Sounds like either a cam sensor or crank sensor. When these go bad you will have the same issues. Sometime it will do it all the time and others it could go days without a problem.

lol would be fast with all the rust falling off!

It has and Autozone or Advance starter in now because the OEM failed many years ago but I do not remember what the truck was doing when it failed.
