My buddy's son wants to build a gaming computer to make YouTube videos for his 7 followers ?. I've tried talking him out of it and his mind is set on it.

Anywho it doesn't have to be anything fancy, cheaper the better. He is looking to play GTA V, Fortnite and I believe he said Minecraft. He would prefer some RBG stuff buuuut I'm more interested on getting him something that will work decently. He currently has some old AMD motherboard and processor that we are unsure of the condition. I'm proceeding like it doesn't work.

I have a desktop with an amd fx cpu
I can look and see what else it has
Is that decent? ? I know very little about gaming rigs and even less about AMD stuff. I swore off AMD after my HP laptop that has a Phantom III in it. Holy shit did that computer suck. Though I know the Ryzen line has caught or passed Intel. Anywho.

Was going to say exactly that.

I've got an old i5-2500K, MSI Z77(?) 8GB of ram (think G.Skill?), and an EVGA GTX670 FTW laying around but with the old i5s not having hyper threading as well as all of the optimizations that have been made since, it would be a bear to do both at the same time.

Actually,

I'd consider just building a Ryzen system. You can do it around the $500 mark all in. Won't be no 4k gaming monster, or even a 1080p gaming monster.

But I'm pretty sure you can run Fortnite on a potato at this point.

Literally this. You can build an awesome, cheap gaming rig with Ryzen. The R5 1600AF is actually a "newer" chip because they ran out of Zen silicon so they used Zen2 silicon and dubbed it an "AF" model.

EDIT: Here it is https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-amd_ryzen_5_3600-927-vs-amd_ryzen_5_1600_af-1157 The R5 1600AF. $85 for a "two generation" old processor that punches way upward.

Yeah, AMD has done some price drops on the new Ryzen Zen2 stuff, and the older Zen1 stuff.

The 2600x is still a good CPU. Its faster than my old 4790k CPU by a good margin. And is actually the CPU I put into my nephew's computer build.

I paid $200 for his 2600x CPU a year ago. So, $170 for the CPU and the Mobo is a great deal.

You could do memory one of two ways. (2) 4GB [8GB total] modules so you an do dual channel which will provide a speed boost. And that would still leave two more slots open to add another 2 modules later.

Or you could do a single 8GB Module now, which sacrifice some performance, but still leaves 3 more slots open for big memory upgrades later if that is the plan.

My nephew's PC is a Ryzen 2600x with an older Nvidia GTX 980 4GB Asus Strix and it handles any 1080p gaming he throws at it all day long.

They're going to grab some stuff from microcenter Wednesday. They are going to get one of the 2600x bundles. How do you pick the proper ram speed? Highest CPU and MOBO will support?

Do games need more than 16gb? I'm thinking do dual channel 8gb now and upgrade to 16 total later unless you think it makes more sense to do single channel 8 to upgrade to dual 16 then 32 down the road

Well shit. That explains why they're so much cheaper than Intel

The Ryzen 3400g is a good low-budget option if you don't do a GPU too. But you'll never really be happy with the performance. Super budget APU benchmarks. Look at the Ryzen 3400G.

Otherwise, go with the Ryzen 2600x and a discrete GPU which will offer much more performance.

Ryzen is "finicky" about RAM speed due to the way its infinity fabric works. Anything labelled "Optimized/Made for/Built For Ryzen" is fine.
Interesting. Thanks!

My Plex server went down and I robbed parts from my PC so I need to rebuild that and was just going to go Ryzen as well

If you owned the 7870 would you pick up the RX 570 for 100?
