So anyone who is familiar with retail gun purchases..... what heck is the hold up on background checks, and is there a good number to call to tell them to hurry the hell up?

I purchased a rifle on Sunday. Obviously I know of the 24 hour period. They entered all my info in the system and advised its pending a background check, as soon as it's approved they can release the weapon.

Well here we are going on 2 full days later and Illinois still has not completed the check. I asked them and they said Illinois has been stupid slow lately. They said it's not anything wrong with me or a denial just sucky Illinois.

So is there anything I can do? I think it's complete BS that I have to wait possibly another day or more for them just to say I'm approved. I already went on their site and confirmed I would be approved for a private gun sale etc, so what could I do or call?

Anyone else have experiences like this? I really need this before we leave for a fun trip to Wisconsin Saturday where a bunch of us were going to some ranges.

I mean it goes through an automated background system..... or well a dumb Illinois employee has to initiate it. Should take 2 seconds and come back approved

I was told it takes a really short time. I purchased it early on the weekend.

I mean if there is the 24 hour cool down period you should be able to run a simple computer background check that spits out a yes or no

I recall when I bought my Beretta at Gat Guns, it was a 3-day waiting period, which allowed time for the state to process my application and run a background check. No clue if it is different for rifles or not.

Google search result:

According to 720 ILCS 5/24-3(g) the waiting period of 24 or 72 hours does not begin until after its application for purchase has been made. The statute defines "application" as: "For purposes of this paragraph (g), "application" means when the buyer and seller reach an agreement to purchase a firearm."

3 days are for handguns. The agreement started early on Sunday, it was signed and submitted via computer. 24 hours for rifles

Pistols are 72 hours. Long guns are 24 hours.

https://ispffl.com/Public/FAQ.aspx

What happens if a customer orders a firearm, and when he comes into pick it up, ISP issues something other than an approval on the FTIP? The actual transfer of the firearm cannot take place until there is an approval from the FTIP system, regardless of when the agreement was reached. If the FFL receives a transaction number, they cannot complete the transfer until they receive an approval.
You keep waiting. You can have your rights back when IL says so.

Basically yes this is what I'm pissed about. I've waited the 24 hours..... going on 50 something at this point.

I'm a law abiding citizen etc......

Yet I'm being denied my right because #illinois.

This whole process is pretty pointless anyway. It only hurts or affects the good people. It has no effect on any criminals

Illinois Carry has many, many threads about dudes waiting well into 3+ days for a long gun background check. FTIP is an older system than NICS but because we're IL and we have all of our special rules despite there being a standardized system, we use it.

That is a very illinois type thing to do..... if I had not lived in this hell hole of a state my entire life I would say that makes no sense.

Sadly using an old outdated system when a standardized one is available makes total sense to me as an Illinoisan

Email your local representative (assuming its not a liberal). Whenever I've had delays with guns, my local guy got shit done.

I'll have to look into that. If nothing else to log a complaint (not that they give a damn).

I mean Illinois had no issues taking my payment and taxes for the gun in seconds.

I try to steer clear from retail gun purchases as much as I can. I built my own rifles, and get second hand guns from people I know that are in perfect or near perfect condition.

Screw this state.

Even ultra cheap, I can build you guys one ultra cheap for much less than you can get one for in a store. Don't buy one at any Illinois shop.

I bet that basic S&W was close to 700 after taxes and other fees, maybe even over. I'll build you that same rifle with a PSA or Anderson lower for 500.

It was on Father's Day special until June 30th. $499.

Can't beat it. Retail was $700

If Illinois ever approves me for it maybe in 2018 I'll post pics
