🔧 BUILD Upside-down M90 GTP build thread

General Information

When your wife gives you permission to build a racecar, you build a racecar.

This is what happened to me. However, all funding for this project comes out of my construction account. I really need a telehandler, so this is very budget friendly. Luckily, I've been stockpiling parts for years. This isn't an overnight build by any means. My goal is to make a 1/4 mile pass with it before the tracks close for the season. I'm taking a risk here and using photobucket for image hosting, so hopefully they don't screw me over again.

So let's start it off. I bought a 04 L26 motor with somewhere north of 100k on it and started to tear it down.

Everything looks good so far. The pistons are really clean. There was some junk sitting in the oil pan, but not much.

So after about 15 tries, I'm finally air tight. Maybe the world's first boost leak free l67 tb over 20 psi.

Now, the thrasher nitrous TB plate has a leak right where the 1/8" npt plug is at. It must be thin and deforms easy or something. I think I will get a gasket and put rtv on both sides to try and seal that up.

But, I just need to wash everything up and put it back together.

I was able to get a little work done today.

I'm planning to change the fuel supply lines up a little to make them look cleaner, but that will have to wait for another day. I did add some heat shielding to the main harness that runs across the engine since it basically sits on the lim. Hopefully I can get it running this week. I need to get a couple of oil filters since I always change the oil a couple times right after pulling the lim.

Yeah, we will see what happens. I've seen people use hose clamps before with good luck. But, for whatever reason, I don't think this clamp worked correctly before. I remember something about it felt goofy when I put it on. This one definitely felt better. I just wish my straps had the little ears to hold the excess strap down.

Street car night is Sept 11th. We're a little over a month away, so I need to get rolling. It would be nice if I can actually get the car together early enough to do some tuning on it before track day.

Axle revision 2 is back in with a new oil filter.

For whatever reason, I really enjoy making fuel lines.

Maybe it's because I get to use my wife's pink screwdriver.

Fuel lines all finished. I was going to wrap them in heat shield, but I don't think that's necessary now that I see how they are routed.

It's up and running. I had a bad misfire on #2. I would let it run for 10-15 seconds, which was enough to build up 50-100 misfires. I swapped plugs, wires, coils, and quadruple checked all my connections. Spent a ton of time on that, and nothing changed.

So, I was about ready to get the compression gauge, but decided to hold the rpm up for a bit to see what happens. Misfires mostly go away over 1500 rpms, but it has completely changed. #2 shows nothing now, and it's 1,3,&6. Nothing severe, but something to watch I guess. Maybe it's a sign or a failing icm?

Anyways, oil is drained and I'm waiting for it to cool a bit to try and suck some coolant into the block, but I think it's bled pretty well.

Yeah if your lifters are collapsed from sitting it might take a little bit with oil pressure to fully pump up especially with old lifters

I think that might be it. It seems to have worked itself out. I guess I should have just let it run a bit longer and I would have saved myself a bunch of work.

I put oil back in and took the kids for a little ride down the street in front of my house. I stabbed the throttle lightly.....the jury is still out, but the bov seems to be way louder.
