I'm very patient. Typically, I'm in no hurry to acquire a vehicle so I have the ability to wait out the e-mailers. I've also spent seven years scouring CL daily and can almost build a "profile" of the sellers just based on their word choice, whether or not they're using keywords, or by searching out their contact info for additional ads.
I typically go for the ads that have little pictures and info. More often than not they are older people who are used to concise postings like they've seen in the local paper. 1 picture, 20 words and I just roll the dice that it's a decent car. Some of my best flips have been from me taking that gamble and driving 20-30 minutes knowing the worst thing that can happen is I'm out $8 in diesel.
This truck had one shitty picture with the wrong wheels on it, parked all crooked in an alley. I showed up to the nicest Cherokee I'd ever seen. One owner, ZERO rust, etc. Guy was asking $3,000. It had the wrong wheels (was a "classic" model with "sport" steelies) and had a leaking radiator. I offered him $2,500 and paid his counter of $2,600. $80 radiator and two days later I had three people show for it and ended up selling it for $6,000 due to putting a good, full description and 20+ pictures up.
Shitty ads, shitty pictures and dirty cars with cups and bottles on the floor are my biggest money makers.

Sometimes I get all jagged off because somebody has something I really want and they don't get back to me... Guy had a complete take-out interior for my old suburban, but it was like a conversion van style with two rows of captains chairs and 3rd row that was power folding into a bed. Dude was asking $1,000 and I was willing to drive right there and buy it. Emailed him EVERY DAY for six weeks. Same email, same time of day, just like fuck it if he doesn't get the message at least I'll piss him off.
