Trailer registration from out of state

So my Grandfather in law is downsizing and we are getting a 4x8 utility trailer to haul home our new to us John Deere 545 and 60 inch deck.

He sent me the Connecticut registration where it was registered as a homemade camp trailer along with a Bill of Sale. I am curious if these documents are of any use for getting the trailer registered ahead of picking it up in Connecticut so I have a plate for it? Or since it doesn't have a title I have to go through the whole homemade trailer inspection process for the Illinois DMV?

Seems to me I need a notarized bill of sale, and then I have to have the trailer inspected. But still in the middle of figuring things out.

Id say fuck the state of IL and don't even plate it unless you are going to use it often. Plate fee's went from $18 to $118 for 3000 pounds or less.

Most I would use it after getting it here is for home depot runs.. until I replace it with an actual car hauler for hopeful future track/race car.

for something that small I wouldn't even consider registering it with infrequent use. The fees are insane for something so small.

IL will certainly fuck you at every chance, so may as well get them back if/when you can. I got a small trailer, thought I was applying for a lost or missing title, plus plates, tax, etc. I bought it from a friend who had bought it new, and I had to fill in a lot of information about him so it seemed like I was doing it correct for a replacement title. It was a total of $333 bucks for all of that, and keep in mind that is what it would be for ANY trailer under 3,000 lbs. Time goes by, they cashed the check for the taxes. Few days later I get everything back for the title and plates saying I need to produce a title. So yes, they charged me the taxes on something I don't even own according to them. No title transfer, no plates issued, but I paid the taxes at least.

I have been driving it around using it with no plates in the meantime. If I knew it was going to be so much money I probably would have found a work around or just not bothered.

In Wisconsin you do not need to plate a trailer 3000 pounds. You could try to say the trailer is from and used in Wisconsin but you probably get a ticket for it.

i think id just be nervous of a "no comply" ticket

i got one of those when i had a ticket for window tint, then got pulled over for window tint, after my ticket due date.

then i had to go to court.

It’s a massive pain in the ass but it is possible, I didn’t have a title for my boat trailer it’s single axel and came from Wisconsin, and managed to get one from Illinois after a month or so of trips to the dmv and some research

In Illinois you need the certificate of origin, a title or try to prove the company is out of business I went with the company is out of business wasn’t forced to prove anything and just had to make up a vin number

It used to be super easy to get a home-built trailer title, but they figured out that everyone was using those to title/plate stolen trailers.
