More than 1,300 cars caught fire after they were fixed by dealers, the company said.

So they identify a safety issue, but then repair the problem by replacing the suspect part (valve cover gasket) with the exact same part. No redesign or anything. They had to have known the part was going to fail again.

oh they identified the issue with the series 1 engines as well as the series 2.
they redesigned the hold down grommets and bolts between the series 1 and series 2.
why do you think the LS motors ended up with a really tall cylinder head rail height and really short flat valve covers with that same style of ring gasket .
trust me they knew about the oil leak issue. the fire issue was probably not as noticeable on the test mules considering the short span of time that they rack up miles vs the years that a typical car takes to rack up miles.

H-E-C-G body owners have long since replaced their valve cover gaskets, (what's this maintenance thing again?) and have no need for a recall.... It's a W-body thing

dont forget that the G/H body 3800 cars have much more room for airflow and cooling/fume dissipation than the much tighter W body
