sounds like the lifters have either come out of adjustment if they are mechanical or if hydraulic just given up

im going to assume this is interference motor so its probably toast. it sounds very weak to turn over, like its tight..

i nickname it Seizuki. Ill tow it home and pop off valve covers eventually

Timing Chain Rattling Noise On 1999-2002
Suzuki 2.5L H25 Engines
The AERA Technical Committee offers the following information regarding a timing
chain rattling noise on 1999-2002 Suzuki 2.5L & 2.7L engines. This noise comes from the
front of the engine, behind the timing cover, and is normally heard the loudest when the
engine is cold. Vehicles affected are the Grand Vitara & XL-7.
There are three timing chain tensioners on this engine, and causing this problem is the
number 1 timing chain tensioner that is not properly adjusted. In order to fix the problem,
Suzuki recommends replacement of the number 1 tensioner only.

If there is a tensioner noise for the first 5 seconds of engine operation, Suzuki considers this acceptable under
normal engine operation.

I was going to say it sounds like a pulley or tensioner. Not valve train or rotating assembly because it's constant and doesn't change with rpm, get louder or stop.

That's pretty weird you and i both drive suzuki grand vitara's for daily drivers. Mine is an 01 had it the last 2 1/3 years.
