It's a documentary about social media and its negative effects on society as a whole. Kind of a bleak Outlook on the future they take. They frame FB are the biggest fish and worst offender. Kind of goes hand in hand with what I've been preaching about FB being the worst invention in history. It's a good watch if you're bored.

I created a Twitter account to receive updates, notifications, etc. Did that two or three years ago, check it frequently, have never created/sent a single tweet.

I agree, don’t need to post every 30 seconds of your attention-starved life.

Cat photos/videos, that’s what the internet is for.

started half of this last night. Nothing really surprising to learn so far. As an older millennial and part of the last generation to grow up before smartphones, I think social media has done a major disservice to society. Its sad to see an entire generation that cannot put down the crackpipe for more than a few seconds, and if they don't get that instant social validation from their peers, they start contemplating suicide. They're manipulating thought like a casino preying on a degenerate gambler. I don't want to say were doomed.. but somedays it feels that way.

They had a pretty damning study that showed that since social media was available on phones, child suicides have gone up like 180% or something insane like that.

Because now, bullies can get them at home now too, some of the things I've heard/seen have been horrific. I have a book face that I only use for Marketplace and a Twitter that I only use for sports updates, but I was active for many many years, and honestly feel so much better leaving it behind.

i'm under the impression this is worse for women?

and instgram/fomo/curated fake lives giving others high expectations/aspirations they are unlikely to achieve
plus the general need for instant attention or mindless scrolling and brain occupying activities instead of doing something productive

in any case sounds interesting and i'll definitely give it a watch. haven't abandoned any social media platforms with any real intent yet. i would expect their usage dramatically falls off for older folks getting married and having kids. younger kids it's probably just rewiring their brains and breaking their mental rewards systems in fucked up ways, probably not all that different than some drugs in the end really.

You're probably right, in the documentary they said there is a trend of women coming in for plastic surgery to make themselves look more like they do with their snapchat filters on. Young women seem to get really hung up with this kind of crap...

They framed it more along the lines of requiring validation, and not getting the reinforcement they want. If something only gets a couple of likes, then there must be something wrong with the way they look, etc.

I dropped FB back when Obama was running for his 2nd term. I still have my account but never log into it and haven't had it on my last couple phones. I just couldn't take the stupidity of people posting how many times their baby burped or took a shit or people complaining about shit in their life that definitely should not be shared in public. Not going to get started on the political nut swinging and everyone yelling/attacking anyone who dared share their thoughts.

FB should have stopped with people connecting with family/friends as that was what that platform was good for.

Yeah, now that I remember it, the study was limited to teenage girls. It didn't mention boys.

I deleted my Facebook a couple months back and haven’t missed it at all. Like Kensington said I may make a new account just for marketplace but I’d rather not.

I tried to make a new account, but there's some BS about not having been on for long and not being active and being able to post stuff on Marketplace. I ended up just opening up my old account, and just only go on with a phone or PC browser

I personally use FB a lot differently than what most do. I join a bunch of groups that are consistent with my interests and really center on memes. So its like specific video game franchises, or TV shows, or movies, or specific cars, dogs, etc. I rarely engage in political discussion, and rarely interact with my "friends" on there. I kinda use it like a forum, but for multiple interests.

Interesting...I had read numerous articles, mostly on the bullying side as a correlation to the suicides. But that's interesting
