North Carolina - small local chain called "Jimmy's Famous Hot Dogs". They are some freaking amazing burgers. My go-to is a Double Bacon Cheeseburger. You can choose your own toppings, they also have a few "presets", I get Traditional - your normal pickles, onion, tomato, lettuce, mayo, mustard, ketchup.
Georgia (Atlanta) - The Vortex. Really wild burger place. Has some insane burgers. Always tasty. AND 21+ only allowed in, so don't have to deal with kids running around and what-not. The owner also has a pretty humorous blog on their site.

local burger, I still enjoy the Lucky Monk. Their smashburger there is my goto, used to be an off menu item, but they added it. I like it paired with their confessional ipa.
The hate for in-n-out is funny. anytime i'm in Cali or west coast its a guaranteed stop. The line spills out into the street, around the block, doesn't matter time of the day. Quality and consistency is key to their success.
I will say the further you go east, I feel the quality decreases. Vegas in-n-out was just ok. Tried one in Houston TX, twice, and it just wasn't as good. They are finally expanding eastward, Nashville is opening one, perhaps someday for us.

I gotta try the Lucky Monk, as I have heard nothing but good things. We usually go to The Assembly when I want a good burger out this way.
But you gotta go there with at least 4 people as the fucking appetizers are HUGE

There's another location in West Dundee for The Assembly now as well.the Assembly has been there forever, and make a good burger too. Definitely try Lucky Monk with a group, that way you can order that GIANT pretzel and the cheese curds. I always want to order the pretzel, but for 2 its just too much
