My youngest daughter just caught. Was about 24ā€, 6.5#. She couldnā€™t hold for pic so my son held it for her. Pic doesnā€™t do it justice, it was massive

Took our French foreign exchange student/chaperone fishing at Cattail Slough for four days. Heā€™s big into fishing for Sea Bass. We caught a lot of small and large mouth bass, catfish, gars and one Northern Pike. Ooooooooooh and one snagged minnow. LOLzzzzz

We had a lot of success using a medium sized gold spoon and red/white spoon lures. He brought his rods and reels with him from France.

guspech750 guspech750 wheres cattail slough? Havenā€™t heard of it

Itā€™s across the Mississippi River from Clinton Iowa.
Earlier in the year the water was higher. So I was able to take my kayak into water that was about 18ā€ with lots of trees sticking out of the water. Caught some good bass in those areas and a small Northern Pike. With the water being lower now I could not make it to those shallow areas. There was no water connecting those areas to the channels. Iā€™d recommend trying it out. It does cost $5 to park there which I quickly pay using my Recreation.Gov app. I have seen the DNR there a few times.

Awesome! Iā€™d like to try and get out there in my canoe some time. Iā€™ve never fished any of the Mississippi backwaters before

Fished with the parents on heideckie yesterday. Skunk city for me. Think I might be done fishing this year. Really not enjoying it lately. Itā€™s been feeling like a chore to pack up gear and find time to do it.

I feel your pain. I went out to Blackwell Forest Preserve at about 6am for two hours on Sunday and caught nothing. Put my kayak into the back of my truck and hit the Fox River in St Charles for about 3 hours and caught nothing. I just stopped off at West Branch Forest Preserve after work for two hours and nothing again. It really sucks. Thankfully I can leave my kayak and gear fully ready strapped in the back of my pick up truck. Takes me a few minutes to unload and load back up. If it wasnā€™t for that Iā€™d for sure just give up fishing around here.

Gotta get out to Cattail Slough.

Black or pumpkin Senkos / Ned rigs. Tap them along the bottom, slow retrieve, intermittent pauses.

Perch or Shad Rapala / Bagley crankbait. Slow retrieve, with intermittent pauses.

White Whoppler Popper. Slow retrieve, intermittent pauses (letting it sit for 5 - 8 secs)

Catfish, crappie, bass, drum, stripers and other species are hitting
