Hey TCG!

I think at this point most of you have seen me around these parts or have even met in person. I've been active on TCG since 2007.

I recently opened up a business on the side of my day gig for service, installation and maintenance of residential and light commercial HVAC. I’ve already done work for a handful of people on TCG and I’m hoping to do more.

Some of the work I can handle for you:

  • Free quotes for furnace/AC/heat pump replacement
  • Emergency(ish) service (my availability is nights and weekends)
  • Garage heaters
  • Mini split AC/Heat pumps
  • Whole house humidifiers
  • Whole house dehumidifiers
  • Energy recovery ventilators
  • Range hood, bath fan, or dryer venting
  • Commercial rooftop units
  • Water heaters
  • Load calculations
  • Consultation

I’ve been in the trade for 17 years and have worked on everything from basic residential equipment to the largest of commercial boilers and chillers. If it heats, cools, dehumidifies or ventilates, I’ve likely had my hands on it.

I’m always happy to work through troubleshooting or answer questions FOR FREE here, email or over the phone.

Feel free to tag me in a thread, PM, text, call or email me with anything you need.

I like those above the door doo-hickeys as that'd be good to equalize pressure between hallway/room too.

Yeah, the other option is to just undercut the bedroom doors more so that more air flows between them, not sure which one I want to do really. :dunno:

They also make an option of one to add to the door itself which might be a good compromise.

I probably have 1"-ish gaps under my doors and that really doesn't do much. These over the doors would be way more betta.

Is there a calculator that will show return grille/filter sizing for a house?

Currently the unit in the house is an old Lennox unit (stats below for G50DF-36A) and there is an inline filter currently (16 x 20 x 1) in the duct work.
View attachment 206254

I am planning on redoing the wall adjoining the furnace where the return grille is located, but I wanted to frame it out and do a return grille with the filter in it so the filter can be more easily changed, and to possibly free up space for duct work when I eventually have the furnace replaced so it could possibly be put up higher in the closet it is in and possibly add a humidifier below it.

Should I up size to a return grille thats maybe 16" x 25" filter, or just stick to a 16" x 20" grille filter return?

Unit is a downforce (all duct work is in the slab) unit, and house is only 915 square feet so I believe the humidifier would need to somehow squeeze in the duct below the furnace and before it goes into the floor, but thats also where the AC coil is so its already trying to squeeze 10 pounds of shit into a 5 pound bag.

Also, do you know if anyone makes a return grille / filter combo that accepts a thicker filter, or are they all 1" units like I seem to be finding online?
Gimme a bit. I’ll take a look at the blower chart for this thing, spec a filter and filter grille.

But the general answer is the absolute largest filter you can put in.

FESTER665 FESTER665 that furnace should be flowing somewhere around 1000CFM.

Put in a 20x20 if you can, commercial style grille.
Hart and Cooley RHF45 series, you can get up to 4" filter depth
I believe they make it in a 16x25 as well

Will look for one of their return grille options first!

Thanks for the assist with sizing.

Our ac doesn’t seem to be keeping up the last couple days. It would blow cool air but not cold. I shut the system down for a few and used a hose to rinse off the condenser but still acting up a bit. Might have to give you a call soon. Like today if it doesn’t keep up. 🤣
