🔧 Technical Sticky gm speedometer

Alright guys I had a weird glitch in the speedometer in our 07 yukon this afternoon. I looked down and thought I was hauling some ass until I came to a stop and the needle stuck a little under 25 mph. When increasing speed the needle would stay the course about that much higher than what I was actually doing. Seemed like it may have been lightly screwing with the transmission shift points as well. Got it home and messing with turning it on and off it came down a little at a time up until I unhooked the battery and at that point it finally zeroed back out and seems to be fine.

It seems to me like it's likely a stepper motor or vss kinda thing but any thoughts would be appreciated. Would an escalade cluster plug right in and work fine? Seems like if ive gotta dick with it I may as well put somethin better looking back in. Don't really care if the miles change as it's already got 250k on it.

Stepper motors are super common and pretty easy to change. Sounds like steppers. You can also reflow the lcd screens when it’s apart

I kinda thought maybe steppers as well but I figure if I have the excuse maybe the escalade cluster would be more bougee. The only thing I think might hang me up is where I have the 60e it says prnd321 instead of prndm and I'm not sure what kind of issues that would cause.

Meh, buy a kit off Amazon and get out the soldering iron. Who cares about the color of some gauges

Yea, reading the title to this thread, I knew it was a stepper motor issue.

How good are your wires and plugs? Remember the VSS signal wires to the PCM run through the harness in those areas.
Gauge steppers are so common though

I'd say your right on that one, looks like the escalade cluster could be more trouble than repairing the cluster I have. Just snag the stepper motor kit with like 6 motors and leds in it? Are all the stepper motors the same? I'm far from scared to use a soldering iron and may decide to get dumb and throw some color behind the thing if I'm gonna bother taking it apart. If it's done it once its just gonna get worse anyway

I haven't pulled it apart to see yet. I just fired a guess at diag and started lookin at escalade clusters when I asked originally lol

my buddy (a dodge mech) has been driving his silverado for 10+ years on just the tach

no fuel gauge either he uses the odo which he reads by shinning a streamlite led pen light through the display face.

I’d just buy something with decent reviews on Amazon, I’d guess most of them are the same on there. Was good enough on my Yukon for a year before I sold it

Super easy to just warm up solder and pull the stepper then to the opposite. You can burn thru the board if you ham fist it but easy to do low heat.

It should be fine. I may get a different cluster to toss in and then take my time messing with it. I try not to suck at everything and I've done a couple overlays before ?

I had an 04 or 05 1500 work truck that did that I think there was a recall for the Speedo on that vintage but I could be wrong, due to it being a company truck they had the dealer fix it so I’m not sure what the fix was

Seems to me like more of an 06 back in the older body style but I'm sure I bought the one newer one with the old motors in it

After I got to looking seriously I decided to just order a refurbished set of z71 gauges. I figure I can just slap them in, program mileage at work and send it. My time is worth something when it comes to dicking around tryin to break it

Z71 gauges installed in about 20 minutes. Easy enough to do but I couldn't get the mileage written into the new cluster. I dont plan on getting rid of it anytime soon and at almost 250k nobody's buying it for the miles anyway so I guess it lost 40k ?
