Hawking gives us 1,000 years to find and colonize other planets. Tick. Tick. Tick.

Renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking said in a speech at Oxford University Union that humanity only has about 1,000 years left of viable existence if it doesn't leave the planet and colonize the stars.

The professor argued that humanity is unlikely to survive all of the different crises we will face over the next millennium. But humans can avoid extinction, he said, if we have colonized other planets by that time, giving humanity a fighting chance away from our "fragile" Earth.

Human race is likely doomed. I agree with the title.

Overpopulation, decreasing resources. We gonna die.

Likely less than 1000. I don't think colonizing other planets will help either.

Nonscientific opinion: I get the feeling that quality of life is going to suck within 200 years. Just look how much has changed in the past 200 years.

Global population is expected to hit 11 billion people by 2100 if this pace continues....combine that with a rapidly warming planet and I don't see how we could make it 1000 years.

Always a safe bet to state something that you know you won't be around for so no one can call you out on your bullshit.

I predict I will have the fastest space ship in 400 years. Fight me on it.

Someone like Hawking is going to be relevant in name until the end of time. I'm sure he is concerned about his legacy to some degree. Especially as a scientist.

1000 years is a long time and honestly I had to look up something he has done other than knowing him for his disability. That is just my ignorance on him nothing against his accomplishments.

However I feel it's a stretch to say he will live on for eternity, unless of
Course he is 100% correct on his 1000 year timeline.

I would bet people from my generation and the current new generation couldn't really name anything he has done. We never learned about him in school and I took a few physics classes in both high school and at the college level.
