Weird shit going on right now on my street. Both our street and the one behind and across from us, nobody can get their outside garage door opener remotes to work. Nobody.

WTF. There is a FB group for the subdivision, and there are like 30 separate complaints at the moment. I take my remote outside, no work. Inside the house it works, and will open the garage.

Looks like something being broadcast in the 300-400mhz range literally in our back yard. Our immediate neighbors dont have anything that might be the culprit - or so they say.

Any opinions as to what it could be???

Literally my first thought. Tinfoil hat on at the moment.

Not really, but seriously. There are news articles about this happening all over the place over the last 5 years. It couldnt be modern wireless related. All wireless devices operate over the 2.4 or 5g wireless frequencies. This has got to be in that 300-400 range.

I've never heard of this happening like ever, so the only thing I could post is aliens. Or you're H-AF, which we've all been there.

I believe first responder radios can interfere with garage doors.

Feds also use those frequencies.

I thought that might be the case since the batteries were replaced at the same time for both from the same package. But its up to like 45 houses now around our street. Its three streets over. Thats got to be something powerful to fuck with that many houses over that big of an area. The FB page is blowing up with people complaining now. Car remotes, garage door remotes and other misc shit not working.

Someone has a wideband jammer, 5-10 watts is all you need to ruin a neighborhood, I built some stuff that went over to the sandbox to interrupt IED’s and cell phones. It’s just RF, lots of wideband noise, you can find the source if you have a spectrum analyzer and a directional antenna, hammies call it a fox hunt.

Good luck.

I had one of those with my job, gave it back when I left last week. Used it for RF surveys. Shit that would be useful right now.

Yeah, this should be doable. Maybe even with cruder gear than that such as just an FM radio that operates on those frequencies and a directional antenna. Garage door openers tend to operate over a wide spectrum which means whatever this is is probably fairly "loud." As the article says there's a decent chance it's something like an arcing transformer causing it.

Shit, I have that exact garage door opener which I installed a number of years ago. No problems with it so far.

When I was a kid and garage door openers were still analog, I created a variable freqeuncy generator with my Radio Shack electronics kit. When enabled, I could turn a POT on the kit and sweep through the frequency range of most garage door openers. I could open all the garage doors on my block with a slow turn of the knob.

Little assholes like me are probably why we now have digital openers which work on a rolling code.

I was in San Diego a while back when the Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier was home.

Hertz had a message in their booth telling customers that their car fobs would not work until they got a few miles away from the harbor.
Of course I tried. Didn't work at airport, worked fine a couple miles east.
