🔧 BUILD Bob’s fuck you 85 k5 blazer CUCV build, it’s got boost, it’s got 1 ton axles and zero creature comforts!

General Information

Lets summarize the shit diesel.

It started with a text from a friend saying come get it for cheap. This is what I ended up with.

Started painting. The desert sand color was in rough shape. When it would get wet you could see the original OD green bleed through.

I've got a thing for green and thought it should go back to its original color since the carc tan was in poor shape.

The suspension rode rough as shit due to it being completely sagged in front. I ordered a set of tuff country HD springs (still softer spring rate than other companies) and a set of 2" blocks for the rear. Turns out the 2" lift, lifted the truck nearly 4".

I hated how small the stock 31x10.5" tires looked after the lift so I ordered some 33" general grabbers since I didn't want to push my luck with the shit 3.08 gears.

Then I moved to Denver and this went from a DD to something I wanted to hit trails with (there are hundreds of miles of legal trails in the area). The biggest problem was actually getting to trail heads because they all started at at least 8,000ft and got over 12,000ft easily. So a change had to come.

Got an awesome deal on some 6.5 diesel shit. Had to piece together other stuff and mod some things to get it to fit.

Turbo install in my shitty tight 1 car garage:

That's a hell of a crack! Is that just a donut flange? Looks like thin stuff.
I’m guessing not having any flex in the system plus fucked mounts plus a flexy vehicle is what did it. It’s a weird v band setup that’s factory. Off the turbo is a v band flange but the inside is the same V then that wedges up against it. Thanks a lot flowmaster!

Got my exhaust but still need to do the trans mount before fitting it, weather and work aren’t cooperating.

Unsure where the fuck it’s going to actually go over the axle, not a ton of room.

Also got the top end mostly buttoned up, may add another bend after the filter, wish there was some where for the batteries to go. Need to put together my oil drain line and then exhaust routing.

Got the top end mostly buttoned up including the oil drain. Braided line really wasn’t that bad to assemble :dunno:

I need to find that wastegate spacer and put a new bolt in still

Trans mount and then exhaust modding is next. Hoping there’s not too many cuts I need to make in that downpipe

I’m excited I found a set and they’re in great condition for $280. Going to sell the center caps for a few bucks on eBay too

This will give me clearance for some 2500hd calipers and finally ditch the shitty d60 single piston with the terrible fucking slider design.

Took it out for its first real drive with the new turbo. I’m thinking I need to turn up the fuel just a bit. It builds boost much quicker than the old gm4 junker. I hit about 800* pre turbo at about 12 psi up a climb so I’ve got a bit of wiggle room. I’m really trying to keep the thing together so trying to be conservative

Looked it up and apparently stock boost is like 20psi on a 12v, I probably need to do something about mine because I’d did hit about 15psi when I stayed in it under some load. I’m thinking 15 is probably about where I’d want to push it as it sits, I know the drive pressure is much lower than the other turbo so I’d think that would help :dunno:

I forgot the guy who I bought the turbo from had an inline boost adjuster thing, the bolt is all the way out but I’ll probably toss a new hose on or just cap and cut that actuator can open and put a spring like I did on the 6.5 turbo. I was also sick of fucking with the downpipe so welded up my old setup and tossed it back on for now. I need this thing driving for a bit.
