San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane is $26.8 million in debt and recently filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, according to a report from The Athletic.

Kane, 29, was originally due $6 million for the upcoming NHL season, though that hasn't been adjusted for a reduction in games (there will only be 56, as opposed to 82). The filing further indicates Kane is unsure about playing at all in 2021: ā€œDebtor may terminate his contract and he may opt out of the season, as allowed under current rules, because of health concerns given the recent birth of his first child. Should he terminate his contract or opt out at a point in the season, Debtor will not receive his salary.ā€

The first game of the year for the Sharks is on Thursday, so presumably, Kane would have to make a decision on his playing future before then.

The Athletic report also details that Kane has 47 creditors listed in the bankruptcy filing, and six active "lawsuits, court actions, and administrative proceedings with lenders." He lost $1.5 million in the last year from gambling, and was previously embroiled in a $500,000 casino markers case with the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. (Casino markers are short-term, no-interest credit lines.)
