A Russian Destroyer approached the U.S.S. Chancellorsville on a collision course forcing the U.S. ship to reverse engines full and maneuver to avoid a collision. The ships were 50-100 feet apart at the closest point.

Both sides are blaming the other for the dangerously close maneuvers. Looks to me like the Russians started it.

More info and video shot by someone on the Chancellorsville in link.

I tend to agree. The Russian military loves to tease and play games with us and NATO allies.

They love to constantly fly bombers/fighters right up to or slightly over international boundries causing us/allies, to scramble jets to go intercept them and escort them back to their airspace. And how much BS have they pulled over in Syria so far trying to test our response...

 Been working at home, and haven't been really paying too much attention...saw the article this morning, but hadn't gotten around to reading it yet. Saw it wasn't in the Persian Gulf, Black Sea, or highly contested areas so said fuck it, can't be THAT important

Yea, I mean, a Captain on a US naval vessel isn't going to put millions of taxpayer dollars out there in a game of chicken.

So where is the Reagan (CVN-76) in all this? This ship is assigned to CSG 5, which the Reagan heads up. I'm surprised that the Commander of the fleet allowed it to even get that close to the group.

I'd also like to know, what ROE is on this. I mean, we don't want to start WWIII, but doing that, are F/A-18's already on Alert 2 at a minimum, and given orders once airborne, that if the Russian boat doesn't change course... Sink the fucker.

Damn, they got really close.

The Chancellorsville helmsman should have given three honks, then slammed the throttles to flank speed and drag raced that Russian hunk of junk!

When I was on instructor duty jack ass's tried that with their speed boat when the USS Fox was putting out to sea.
IIRC, it was my 1st time heading out, maybe the 2nd, so I was top side watching.

As they say, you just can't fix stupid, and morons in speed boats & other countries just love to make us look weak, because they know we can't just let them eat a missile or torpedo :(
It's always our fault, and no matter what happens, they win :(

I'm no expert, but I wonder how long it would take at that range to blast a few holes in that DD from the auto load 5"???

Speaking of Russian junk, their only "operational" aircraft carrier (I quoted that because that term is a misnomer), the Kuznetstov is being drydocked and in need of more overhauls/repairs... :D

Russia's Only Aircraft Carrier Needs To Head to the Scrap Yard: Experts
The Russian navy plans to dry-dock its only aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov in 2020 and conduct extensive repairs on the aging, unreliable vessel.

The plan makes a perverse kind of sense from Moscow’s point of view. But it’s still a bad idea, two experts explained in Proceedings, the professional journal of the U.S. Naval Institute.

“As Russia’s only aircraft carrier and its flagship, the Kuznetsov’s main mission is projecting national prestige,” wrote Richard Moss and Ryan Vest, both instructors at the U.S. Naval War College. “From that perspective, Russia must overhaul her and get her back into service as quickly as possible.”

But from the perspective of utility to current Russian navy strategy, “Kuzya” is a huge resource sump that will never offer as much value as several Yasen-class fast attack submarines or a squadron of small, lethal missile patrol boats. She has never performed her original mission of extending Russia’s defensive perimeter, nor has she been a reliable power projection platform. The ship has suffered her share of power plant, hull, aircraft launch and recovery, electrical and mechanical problems and is expensive to man and maintain.
Kuznetsov commissioned in 1990. Problems plagued the ship from the beginning. One of Kuznetsov’s major weaknesses is her lack of catapults for launching her fighters. Another is her powerplant. The vessel is powered by steam turbines and turbo-pressurized boilers that Defense Industry Daily generously described as “defective.”

I mean, a bunch of their "most advanced" boats are sailing with tug boats because they are so unreliable. The Russian navy seems to be in shambles...the recent sub fire, their comedy of errors aircraft carrier, and their other unreliable boats having to sail with tugs...The Chinese navy, at this point, is a far greater threat than the Russians...

They are all about keeping appearances. If that means dumping unreal amounts of money into this thing, they will do so to make them look strong to their people.
