I knew it was coming, but didn't realize it was actually this close. But as of January 14th, Microsoft will no longer be providing ANY support for Windows 7. Tho I don't know how many holdouts there are still out there, like me . I never upgraded my main rig from 7 because I liked it, and everything worked the way I wanted it to. But now it looks like I have no choice. I don't want to be playing malware roulette with this thing after there are no more security updates coming. Sigh. It was a good run.

Try having to upgrade 1000s of computers when a team who won't implement SCCM or at least WDS with a MDT server. Windows 7 to 10 upgrades have been my life for a while now.

Also as an FYI, just because you are on Windows 10, doesn't mean you aren't EoL as well.

Type "winver" from the start menu and see what your feature level is. If the version reported isn't at least 1809 then you aren't receiving security updates anymore. I'm not allowed to move up to 1909 yet at work as they are still evaluating it since 1909 apparently caused some issues with a few apps. So I'm stuck at 1903 for a while.

I’m on 7 with my 3 desktops. My son switched to 10 on his rig and likes it...I don’t.

My recording rig doesn’t see much net action other than driver updates, but switching to 10 could make a lot of my outboard not work which would be bad. I was bouncing my mixes (24/48khz) over to Abbey road for mastering yesterday, and it handled 33 tracks w/o a glitch. I’m going to stick with 7 for a real long time!

You can upgrade to 10 for free as long as you have a windows 7 key or are currently running Windows 7 with an active license.

You can also use a cracked windows 7 install, make sure it shows activated and just upgrade to 10 for free.

I recently updated my main home services PC from windows 7 to 10 after dreading it and surprisingly it went smooth and nothing broke. But that was short lived. I recently wiped it and installed Proxmox and running everything in Linux containers or VMs.

Wayyyyyyyy more efficient and faster then windows 10 even when I am running more services on it then before. Linux FTW.

I still have my gaming rig running Windows 10 because it's really the only option right now for most games. Although steam and Linux seem to be getting better at game support.

Care to elaborate?
The upgrade from 7 to 10 went without a hitch. Everything worked, no complaints.

The "short lived" was because I went away from windows 10 all together and migrated to Linux.

If I need anything specific to windows, I just spin up a windows 10 virtual machine within linux.

I have no issues with windows 10 other then their telemetry and bullshit garbage apps/games will sometimes reinstall themselves when 10 updates (like candy crush and Skype)

Supposedly theres still a way to upgrade to 10 for free, even tho the "Free" offer from microsoft ended in 2016. According to the comments people are leaving this is still working

Yeah, that still works.

You can also download the Windows 10 upgrade assistant too.

If you don't want to deal with stupid questions during the upgrade you can execute the Setup.exe from an Admin CMD prompt with some extra switches. To get a admin cmd prompt, find Command Prompt in the Start Menu, and right click and choose Run as Admin.

Change drive letter and type:

Setup.exe /Auto Upgrade /showoobe none /dynamicupdate enable

/Auto upgrade: Upgrades in place, keeps all apps & files.
/showoobe none: disables the out of box experience after the upgrade is complete.
/dynamicupdate enable: grabs the most recent updates from MS while doing the Win7-10 upgrade.

Basically if you kick it off with those switches you can walk away and it'll do everything without waiting.

I've got about 50% of the company swapped over. We don't want to but we have no choice.

It doesn't help that we have legacy programs from 2007-2009 that require old school backbone (2007 Access DB for example) with no replacement in sight.

right before my 2018 se asia trip, a friend had an IT person reach out to me to do some database work at this company where he was doing some desktop stuff.

some kind of order taking system, something run-the-business important, totally stopped working in the new year. it actually stopped every year. it was already the 6th. usually their IT guy fixed it, but they had recently fired him. he was doing something like running a bunch of shady shit on their servers.

i told the guy that reached out to me that this might be more of a 'hella fucked' situation. i had a theory of what it might be and my hunch turned out to be right. luckily i was able to actually access anything to even explore the theory and fix the problem.

this thing was running on some old as fuck database i had never touched before, not sure if i had even heard of it? they were on a version from 2003 or 2004. thankfully i was able to google and find, and it was still using, the default admin password.

i poked around and eventually found a calendar looking like table in the database. so i populated records for 2018 to 2022 or something like that. then told them it was fixed and that they should get the fuck off this system by the end of the year. apparently the old IT guy would just go in each year and add a new year for data so that he could look like the needed hero :geek: even though he was really :poop:
