🔧 BUILD Pratt's 997.1 911 Turbo

General Information

I have been kicking around the idea of buying a 911 Turbo for years now. I love the 930, 964, and 993 are all out of my price range. Air cooled Porsche are pulling insane money right now. But the 996 (2001-2005) and 997.1 (2007-2008) were in my price range. Not like anything is wrong with them by any means. They started out with 415hp in 2001 up to 480hp in 2007. Plus they have AWD. And let's not forget the incredible torque they make.

After looking for a while I decided to hunt down a 997.1 for a few reasons. It still looks modern (especially the interior), it has an upgraded AWD system over the 996, has variable geometry turbos that spool quickly and make great torque just about anywhere, and it has round headlight. haha But a big reason to get a 2007-early 2009 was the 2010 cars had a different motor and were mostly dual clutch cars. The pre 2010 car used the famously reliable Mezger engine.

The car doesn't have a lot of options. But it has the two main ones I wanted. Locking diff and Sports Chrono package. It has heated seats, Porsche insignia in the headrests, sport steering wheel, and Bose stereo adds a nice touch in the interior. But more than anything it was the color I wanted. I didn't want a silver or black one. It seems those two colors make up like 90% of these cars.

Here are some pic for now. Mook said he would shank me if I didn't post up about the car. So after two days of lots of driving, I took a few pics. So it is a little dirty.

So the new suspension, brake duct cooking, and brakes are finally going in.

I just have to decide how low I want to go. I love the look of it slammed low. But it's not practical. I mean the front spoiler scraked coming in and out of my driveway at the stock ride height.

Cool > sensible. Damn lack of front axle lift! haha

I really haven't been able to get the car out for good pictures. But I think the ride height is just about perfect. As low as I wanted to go without making it difficult to drive over speed bumps, driveway inclines, and such.

The car handles and steers like a precision instrument now. The car feels like a sports car versus the Grand Touring car it was designed to be. The car is almost telepathic as to what you want it to do. The springs aren't crazy rates but still a significant bump. They are about in the middle between the stock springs and the Cup race car rates. They are a 400/700 lbs/in. But with the Tractive shocks/struts and DSC controller, it is very comfortable when just cruising. It weird because even the factory springs and shock/strut management in sport mode is harsher riding with the new setup in Sport mode. I haven't even played with the DSC file to see how much more plush I can make the normal mode.

Eric and Pat at Herbst High Performance did a great job on the car. I'm sure the alignment was a pain to do with all the adjustments to get the ride height correct with the slight rake. Plus all the suspension parts to adjust and set the car up neutral to start.

Anyways, here are some pics from when the car was done. The car is dirty but oh well. lol And a comparison of factory suspension and current setup.

Then I was able to get the car out to Blackhawk Raceway for a HPDE. I had never been on track there before. They have a rule if you have never been on their track before, you have to run in the novice group. Which was fine. It gave me no pressure and would allow me to get used to the car. I started with decent times in the 1:37-1:38 times as the car felt very stable, turned in well, and felt very neutral. No pushing or feeling the rear end was going to come around me. Unfortunately, I was in traffic all day since passing was only allowed in two spots. So in some areas, I was getting much quicker to only be slowed down by traffic. I think my best time was only 1:31. Hopefully, I can get out on track a couple more times this year. Be it Blackhawk, Autobahn, or somewhere else. So I can run in the intermediate group and not be held up as much.

Also, the car has way more power than I felt comfortable using. I would accelerate hard out of corners and then in the longer sections I just kept a steady speed I felt comfortable with. One lap I made a Bonzi run on the longest straightaway. I hit 134. And was not comfortable at that speed and braking. So the driver is much less capable than the car at this point. All in all, a fun day and I got to get accustomed to the car some. I'm excited to see what I can do with it in the future.

I have yet to look at the track photographers' website. Hopefully, they got some good shots of the car.
