I just don’t understand why you would want this card. Negligible single digit gains for double digit costs over a 3080, let alone a 3090.
Because way to rich fucks who just need the best of the best so they can run solitaire and suck at it.

So, the Ryzen TRP are out of stock, the 5000 series is around the corner.

But I'm thinking of just diving into an EPYC 7443P server. Found a Mobo that has dual 10Gig-E Nics, 8x SAS3 on-board, IPMI...etc.

Without RAM, I'm looking at about $2300 to get a 24 core EPYC. Which would work great as a home lab environment (and great for Plex!)

So, I'm really beginning to narrow down the build to determine if its worth it for me to build it.

AMD EPYC 7443P CPU
  • 24 cores, 48 threads
  • 2.9ghz base, 4.0ghz boost.
Supermicro MBD-H12SSL-CT-O
  • 8x 288pin DD4-3200mhz ECC Rgistered, up to 8 channel memory config.
  • Dual 10Gig-E Ethernet Ports
  • IPMI 2.0 - Remote Management via LAN interface, no monitor needed for anything.
  • 8x SAS 3008 SAS3 12Gb ports.
  • 8x SATA3 Ports
  • 5x PCIe 4.0 x16 Slots
  • 2x PCIe 4.0 x8 Slots
  • 2x M2 NVMe PCIe 4.0 for 2280, or 22110 length M2.
  • 7 PWM fan connectors with dual zone control.
128GB of 4x32GB DIMMS of ECC Registered DDR4-3200mhz memory.

I can do the whole package for about $2800. And its WAY more CPU than I need, so it would last quite a while.

The 128GB of RAM would would be enough to run a few hosts and I may even try and virtualize my gaming PC. Or, with the 10Gig-E, I could run a dedicated connection to the Gaming PC via iSCSI.

Picked up another NVMe enclosure with a WD Black SN770 1TB drive:

7DFD5B2D-FF1C-49DD-BD81-FD0E05411BDC.jpeg

I saw the SN770 came out after the SN750, and didn't want to spend SN850 or Samsung 980 Pro money. The SN770 doesn't have DRAM, but for what I'm going to use it for doesn't matter (storage while on the road). It's going to supplement my 512GB drive on the MBP 14". It's rated at 5,150/4,900 MB/s.

Quick test with Blackmagic and a 2GB read/write has it about 800/800 MB/s, compared to 800/750 MB/s for the 750.

Performance-wise Tom's Hardware gave it a pretty good testing, and the results were pleasing.

The drive was $105 (Amazon), and the enclosure (RTL9210B) was $30 (up a few dollars from the last time I got it).

Shout out to Thirdgen89GTA Thirdgen89GTA on educating me on which chipset to get for the enclosure for max speed.

Edit: I'll post up the Blackmagic test results from both a bit later.

Well, assimilation complete. It's not terrible. I guess.
I went 11 on my gaming PC. A few hiccups here and there but it performed the same as when 10 was on it from what I could see. I had a few audio driver issues initially, but after that it was fine.

I went back to 10 for now and will go back to 11 when it matures more. I thought there was a specific version of 11 that was supposed to be only for gaming PCs as well at some point.

Im hoping they do this and basically give us a stripper version of 11.

I’ve been eyeballing the WD m.2 stuff. I’ve been on Samsung for years and years but it seems to blow them out of the water.

Really I’m in the market for large storage for games and files. I’ve got a 970 evo m.2 running win11 and then an older 850 ssd for storage that’s nearly maxed
If you don't care about absolution fastest god damned storage not the market, SN850 or 980 Pro, whichever is cheaper.

If you want a 4TB drive, only of the top 3, only the KC3000 come in that size. The SN850 and 980Pro are 2TB max.

I don’t need that much. Im in the market for 1tb probably.

I’ve always had my setup segregated pretty well and it’s paid off in the past when I drive fails or I have an issue with something and need to wipe and reformat but I’m probably leaving a performance on the table with my OS on that 970. Maybe I’ll just pick up a wd sn850 and toss my games and os on it.

If you take a look at that Tom's Hardware link, they have them included in the testing and give an honest opinion on them a good results. They have their pro's and very few cons. I was just looking from a financial perspective. I almost went with the 980 Pro, but for the extra $60 or so I'd never see the speed difference with an external drive. Internal, probably.

For SATA SSD's I've had really good luck with WD, Samsung, and Sandisk. I have at least one of each in my desktop right now, and have a WD Blue in my mom's laptop, and also a WD Blue in my dad's. For what they do it's perfect. IIRC my desktop's root drive is a Samsung 860 Evo, and my main "quick" storage as a staging for my photos and video is a Sandisk 1TB.

All of my long term storage is running on two WD Blue 4TB spinners, as independent devices.

I've gone back and forth a few times, and what I'll probably end up doing is abandoning my Win10 desktop and change it into a NAS, then load it up with platters and set it up as RAID5. Either that or go with a dedicated NAS that has both dual ethernet and at least one USB-C connection. I have hundreds of thousands of photos, and more recently with the purchase of the GoPro I am amassing a lot of videos that I like to keep the original file for, since the GoPro Quik app sucks and destroys quality if you use it.

So, I've been on the fence, practically falling off the fence to be honest. I spoke with the company I work for about a test environment for SCCM so we can do some wild and crazy things without impacting the prod environment and they really weren't interested. I've got some fairly ambitious idea's about implementing some things, and to be honest I really needed a test environment to flesh them out before implementing them in prod.

So, I heard the answer back, not really interested in giving me a test environment. So I fell off the fence.

I pulled the trigger on this just this morning so I can build my home lab.

AMD EPYC 7443P Server CPU.
  • 24 core / 48 thread @ 2.85ghz / 4.0ghz boost
  • 128MB L3 cache
  • 128 PCIe Gen 4.0 Lanes
192GB DDR4-25600 Registered ECC memory

Supermicro H12SSL-CT-0
  • 2x 10Gig-E ports
  • 1x SAS3008 Controller with 2x 8 channel SAS ports.
  • 8x Channel memory up to 2TB.
  • 5x PCIe 4.0 x16 slots
  • 2x PCIe 4.0 x8 slots
  • 2x M.2 Gen4 NVMe slots up to 22110
  • 1x IPMI 2.0 Out-of-Band Remote management with dedicated LAN port.

I will install all of this into my 100TB TrueNAS server to replace the aging 4790k CPU with 32GB of ram.

Nope, but all should arrive monday.

Except for the mounting kit I need to source from Noctua for free, cause I needed a CPU HSF combo that would work with the MASSIVE size of the AMD EPYC chip. But you can't just buy a kit with that in there, gotta buy the HSF, then contact customer support for it, but they'll ship it free.
