In other countries, roof crossbars are very common. A ladder, travel tent, snowboard/skis, and more are commonly on them. Like KJ said, they even offer a factory basket option. The car blue-sun posted even has one on it.

Jimy Bilmo linked was also 996 and earlier generation cars. The 991 & 992 are much bigger in overall size and interior room. I've seen adults in the back seats of 991 and were ok. Long road trip? Nah. Most teenagers and younger would be comfortable back there.
