We're having a bunch of family and friends over for my son's high school graduation party.

In addition to stock up some beer and wine, I thought it might be fun to stock the ingredients for a traditional Old Fashioned but also for 3-4 variations.

That said, which variations might you guys suggest? I've never bought bourbon before either, so which one would you suggest I get?

For example I was watching this video:

There's a few variations I make.
- Smoked maple
- Oaxacan
- Peanut butter
- Bananabread
- Jack and Coke

To make most of those if pretty simple. You need mezcal, screwball and a banana liquor. The jack and coke requires cooking down mexican coke to a syrup. The best 2 on that list is peanut butter and oaxacan IMO.

For a spirit you can go with something cheap and good like Old Forester 100, Wild Turkey 101. If you want less proof Elijah Craig and Woodford is good. A bourbon and rye is a good start. Old fashioneds taste great with either. Make your own simple syrup and buy angostura bitters, both aromatic and orange.

how fancy do you want to get here, are you serving in a rocks glass? you could use clear/ cocktail ice, but if its going in party cups probably not worth it. I'd go with lower proof bourbon or rye, something like woodford, Bulleit, or Knob creek. Use simple syrup to save time and buy angostura bitters. Costco was selling a jar of Amarena cocktail cherries.

Bulleit also makes premixed old fashioneds, just add ice. They aren't terrible either. https://www.bulleit.com/bulleitCraftedCocktails/

And for Bourbon for an old fashion, depends how much you want to spend. But any normal buffalo trace, Woodford reserve or 4 roses will be fine. They are all around the same price point and IMO taste great in an old fashion.

This peanut butter one is enticing. What does the skrew ball replace? The bourbon?

I like to make my old fashioneds very sweet with a sweeter/lighter proof bourbon. My go-to is Buffalo Trace, good cheap bourbon perfect for a mixer. Simple sugar cube with about 4 dashes of bitters on it and mash it up, i use Angostura bitters also. I actually cut up a small slice of orange and rub it on the rim of the glass and squeeze a little juice in too. Then put it on a stick with a cherry, and throw it in the glass with a big cube. Then filler up!

Another buddy suggested I get/use Sazerac.

Not a fan

Yea, not really a fan of Sazerac either, unless it's the antique collection bottle, which you AREN'T using as a mixer...

Agree with keeping it basic when choosing a Bourbon for your purposes. Woodford Reserve, Makers Mark, Bulleit Rye, Buffalo Trace, or Four Roses would all work. Don't spend a fortune on something you will be using as a mixer.
All good bourbons for an old fashioned, and good advice.

BT can sometimes be harder to find, and if he's not a bourbon drunker, any left after the party will probably sit. Standard 4 roses is easily on the shelf everywhere and very budget friendly, and taste good
