We adopted a Cat. His name is Mr B. 12 yo fluffy black cat. Dunno much about cats. A friend of my wife got a new job in an another country and they can’t bring any pets. So far he is cool. Likes to play. Doesn’t like to jump and sucks at it. He is overweight and will be feeding him controlled amounts instead of free feeding him. He is in good shape for an old guy.

Um, have a vet take a look at him, cause I think he's a Norwegian Forest Cat. They're supposed to be a little on the large side. If, he is, get a good cat brush as you'll want to use it frequently to keep his coat from tangling. My mom had one, which made it to 19 before having to be put to sleep this past March. Had bad arthritis in her hips, and succumbed to renal failure (kidney disease). But she was a great and faithful companion the whole time.

Vet paperwork from the previous owner said he was a little on the heavy side. That was only a month ago. We are just going to watch how much he eats for the time being but not fill a giant bowl like the previous owners did. He came from a house that had 2 small crazy pugs so having 2 larger mostly chill dogs so that will be a big change. My wife is finding out the breed from the previous owner so we know more.

Whichever food you go with, make sure it has low protein content, which will help keep the weight off. Plus, as a "senior", the protein is harder on them. Any senior diet food will follow that rule. I've had very good success with the Hills Science Diet (all of their different age levels (Kitten, Adult, Senior)). If you have to transition him to a different food, just do it slowly, mix in a little of the new stuff at first, then gradually increase it till it is all he is eating.

For now we will be monitoring Mr B's food intake just to see how much he is eating. no limiting of his food but no giant bowl with 1/2 a bag of food in it. He is getting some fancy food from a local place, both wet and the dry food he has been eating. Vet appointment is next week to check him out. we were given a couple brushes and he loves getting brushed. I just break it out and he jumps onto my lap. only issue is he wont let me brush his underside at all and it is matted in a couple spots there so guessing prior owners are not able do that either.

that is 100% incorrect

1. Cats are obligate carnivores

This means they need meat to survive. They cannot get enough nutritional support from plant-based proteins such as grains and vegetables, because, unlike humans and dogs, they lack the specific enzyme that processes plant-based proteins metabolically. They need little or no carbohydrates in their diet. Feeding foods high in carbohydrates leads to a number of degenerative diseases, including diabetes, kidney disease, and inflammatory bowel disease.

2. Free choice feeding leads to obesity

Many pet owners feed dry food because it can be left out during the day without spoiling while the cat is left at home alone. This method of free choice feeding is one of the leading contributors to obesity in cats. Cats, by nature, are hunters, and it does not make sense that they should need access to food 24 hours a day. Feeding two or more small meals a day mimics their natural hunting behavior much closer. By feeding controlled portion sizes rather than leaving food out all day long, calorie intake and weight can be controlled without the cat going hungry.

3. Dry food is the leading cause behind most urinary tract problems

Dry food is the leading cause of most urinary tract problems in cats. While cats who eat only dry food will generally drink more water, they still don’t get enough moisture to support all their bodily functions. These cats essentially live in a constant state of low level dehydration, which can lead to bladder and kidney problems.

4. Dry food can lead to diabetes

Due to the high carbohydrate content, dry food dumps unnaturally high levels of sugar into the cat’s bloodstream, which can lead to an imbalance of its natural metabolic process. In extreme cases, this can, and often does, lead to diabetes.

5. Dry food does not clean teeth

The myth that dry food cleans teeth is one that just won’t die. Most cats don’t chew their kibble long enough for any of the scraping action that is the theory behind this myth to kick in. What little they do chew shatters into small pieces. Some pet food manufacturers offer a “dental diet” that is made up of larger than normal sized kibble to encourage chewing, but in my years at veterinary practices, I’ve seen many cats swallow even those larger size pieces whole. Additionally, dry food leaves a carbohydrate residue in the cat’s mouth that actually encourages growth of tartar and plaque.

6. Eliminate all dry food from your cat’s diet

The one best thing you can do for your cat is to stop feeding dry food and feed a meat based, grain-free raw, homemade or canned diet which is consistent with the biological needs of a carnivore.

You may find that some cats are very difficult to wean off dry food, further supporting the junk food analogy. They’re literally addicted to the carbs and additives used in these diets. During the manufacturing process, substances called “digests” (fermented by-products of meat processing with no nutritional value) are sprayed on the outside of the kibble to make it more palatable to the cat. Most cats wouldn’t touch dry food if it wasn’t for these flavor enhancers. For these hard-core addicts, you will need to transition them to a healthier diet somewhat slowly. Never let a cat go without food for more than 24 hours.

I have a lot of experience caring for a cat that had medical issues due to eating dry cat food.
All his problems disappeared once he started eating wet canned food exclusively. This included obesity, urinary tract issues and the start of kidney failure. He also had LOTS more energy and seemed much happier once off the dry food.

Our cat has an automatic Wi-Fi connected feeder that gives him 4 small portions a day. I swear he can tell time. He starts getting antsy about 15 minutes before each feeding, then goes running for his bowl when he hears his food drop.

Yesterday he was very happy to be helping me work from home from our sunroom with all of the windows open.
