If you're under 10K feet you don't have to use 1090MHz ADS-B you can use the 978MHz version. A great deal less people monitor that one. I have been meaning to get a dongle. Based on the flight path it looks like the aircraft was doing touch and goes. (common for flight training) But the altitude and speeds look weird. A 172 won't go 200mph
They do touch and goes, as well as training the students on airport ops too, so they may have been working with the DPA control tower for landing/take-off, taxiway communication, etc...
Although, for the boy, they would do that from DPA, take off, go out to Dekalb Muni, land, take back off, and come back.
