I've had this old xs650 sitting around for like 6 years. I bought it, rode it around for a while, then when I moved it got stuck in storage. When I got it out like 2 years later it was ate up by rats, so I stuffed it in the shed for it to meet its demise. When the rats finally did their work on the shed and i tore it down i stuck it in the corner of the garage. About two months ago I pulled the thing out and went to work on it.

It's a bone stock engine with pod filters and some cut off exhaust. I bent and welded the shock mounts and made the battery tray. Pulled the engine to fix the bendix gear and re-gasket it. I do multiple projects at once so this one has taken a seat for a minute while I work on...

While I work on...the dune buggy engine. Most folks have worked on a briggs before, but ever seen a 4 cylinder briggs? I watched the episode of roadkill garage where freiburger and dulcich get a dune buggy, and they were freaking clueless.

The buggy is built with pre 65 running gear, but with a dual port engine. It came out of a bus, and was leaking oil from everywhere. Even the top of the fuel pump. Tons of crank case pressures. When I pulled it out I found dished pistons and some of the worst looking ports on cylinder heads I've ever seen.

I've been working on fixing those errors. Found a set of flat tops to get my cr back, and used some carbide burrs to clean the ports up.

Onto the pics.

Small update. I think the venturis we're too big on the duals for the smaller engine, couldn't get enough vacuum to get it to idle well and not want like 38-40 degrees at full advance. I swapped it for a progressive 2 barrel and cb performance distributor, and she runs like a champ. Spent this past weekend at cruising the coast down in Mississippi tearing it up.
