Craig's Bond was the closest portrayal of how Ian Fleming envisioned and wrote the character. Believe it or not, for Casino Royale, the extra bulk that Craig put on was too much for that intended character, which even he admitted. It's why he's not as bulked up in the subsequent movies.
I'll admit, at first I didn't like the idea of a blonde Bond, but that is how he is in Fleming's books. I didn't think Daniel Craig had the chops to pull off the character, then I saw him in Layer Cake. There is a scene in which he imitates Bond, and just fucking nails it. That was shortly before he even auditioned for the role. I saw Layer Cake after Casino Royale came out, and have no doubt in my mind they chose correctly.
