🔧 BUILD My junker Buick revival....

General Information

Doubt anybody cares but figured I had my cucv build here so why not. This is my first car when I was 16, it's a 1970 Buick gran sport. It was slightly less junk then but not by much. It got parked after the trans gave way as well as the brakes. It sat for many years outside and then a few years in a garage. I was finally able to go and get it last week.

The uncovering aka barn find status.

Emersonhart13 and I were able to get it on to the trailer (my brother helped)

Getting it off the trailer turned into a hell of a thing as well. A neighbor walking by was kind enough to help out.

Got her over to her spot so the wife can potentially park in the garage again

Got to work today on it. Checked the oil and threw a battery in it. Gave it a bit of spray and she fired right up. Steady oil pressure and a bit of an exhaust leak. Seemed to idle oh so nice for sitting for a good 8 years. RAN WHEN PARKED

Yep, leaking.

Wasn't done for the day. Decided that since the engine seemed all good for now, might as well get going on the trans.

The coolers used on those Era cars is just a loop of 3/8 hardliner clipped under or in front of the core support. You could bend one up out of a 6 or 8 foot line.
I had read in a few places that adding volume to a power steering system is more effective than trying to use a small cooler. Even if it doesn't exchange heat with anything, the added volume helps a lot more than the fins. Imagine using the same heater for your hot tub in a lake.

Rebuilt quick ratio box installed. My stock box was a variable unit and seemed to be original to the car. I think I’m going to buy a small cooler for it but plumbed it normal for now.

Will be curious on your reaction to this. I honestly think I liked the variable ratio box of my first Astro rather than the quick ratio in the second.

I was going to run one of these

My box was leaking pretty bad, it also felt dead in that middle area with some slop. It’s 53 years old.
quick ratio, meaning the metric chassis(g-body f41 package) box?

No there’s a dude that rebuilds factory boxes to 12.7:1 ratio. He’s all over everything A-body groups and is in to Buicks. Once I get my core charge back I’ll be like $220 in to this new box with the same casting numbers as original and direct replacement.

That's crazy. I didn't know that was a thing. Here I am still hoarding f41 gbody boxes and the performance package 3rdgen fbody stuff, but then converting to metric fittings and shit

I mean that’s one way. I think specific to the A-body the sweep is wrong for the g body and 3rd gen boxes so your turning radius is worse.

This dude charges $370 shipped and will do $160 if you return a good core with under 3.25 turn lock to lock or variable box. Seemed worth it compared to even remans which always seem to suck for anything.

I’ve officially buttoned up the rear suspension and rear end minus some gear oil and double checking pinion angle so I can measure for a driveshaft. Running the 3” exhaust is going to be a pain in the ass, I half hung it but I need to adjust a few things to clear the driveshaft and get it away from the tank a bit.

I put new adjustable coil over brackets on so I can get this thing lower with more travel, it also hangs them at less of an angle which I think will ride better.

Was hard to get any sort of worthwhile pictures.

Excited Season 5 GIF by The Office

I’ve knocked a few bigger things off the list the last two weeks.

Car has working brakes. I’m going to do another bleed just because it was a completely new/dry setup but it’s exciting to have brakes. Hoping they work awesome.

Tonight I now have a working clutch pedal and it feels fucking awesome. Unsure if I’ll need to make a pedal stop or not, MDL makes no mention of it with their kit.

This was the best place I could find for my reservoir.

I’ve got some fancy shit in the way that hopefully will speed up the rest of what I need to do. It’s certainly holding up a few things.

Oh also got my tail pipes in, need to mod my hangers a bit for the mufflers to make sure they don’t kiss my u-joint and then I can cut and weld to my collector reducers.

Anybody have any opinions on if this is enough space? I basically figured if my hand can fit then it’s probably enough room between the tank, frame, tires, etc. 3” piping is tighter than I thought
