Found an original sales brochure for the all new for 78 Malibu. I’m stoked!

Little update. I’ve admittedly hit the wall of my knowledge. These electronic transmissions and their 27 connections are voodoo to me lol. Carl @redlinepowertrain is taking the car in to finish up and the plan is to take a “new” build well over 120mph from his shop to mine.

Anyway, trans lines and me have a history. I remember running them like crap on my 79 bu 11 years ago and never forgot how shitty it looked seeing them hang in cool burnout pics. So, here’s a pic of those because no one will see them anyway. And I picked up a built 8.5 rear with willwood brakes after Carl’s done doing his thing to swap in.

hubs and centersection axis never seem to line up concentric on them things, they'll pull out of alignment even more when welded

i fixtured the shit out of an 8.8 to an acorn table with a 1.75" bar centered through the caps and tube ends and it still moved.

might want to have em check that while its on a bench
I’m sorry, I don’t understand any of this. The welded c-clips? It came out of a running car I hope they figgered it out. If it’s fucked can you fix it ? I don’t weld. ?

when they weld the tubes to the centersection since the factory rosette welds tend to let em spin in the centersection from the factory the tubes distort around the welded brackets/etc and the rotational axis of the wheel bearings....and the diff are no longer in line.

that deviation can grow in a hurry and lead to a noisy rearend when they are welded.

with the axles out and the center pin removed you can center and tape a thread cross across each axle tube end and sight through you can see it by eyeball the diff splines will be off center even on a stock rear at about 1/16th to 1/8th inch

i figured i could do it better, fixtured the shit outta one and it still moved. i have a hard time believing that the typical "just weld it on the bench" job is good....so id suppose to ask was it made by moser/etc with a bar jig?

No idea. It came out of a running car and was fine so I’m throwing it in mine lol

I finally made it to the track. Got a decent tune bug to work out but still went 10.7 off the foot brake. The car was a whole nother animal off the trans brake and went a tenth faster to the 60’ but that’s all that was recorded on 41’s ghetto ass slip. Here’s a few shitty pics because they don’t have a track photographer and I’m not friends with Steven Spielberg. Oh, and I drove there and home successfully. This is about a 3700lb car w/me, all motor.

The tune bug is a major flat spot after shifting into second. It stops climbing rpm for 2 seconds and then goes again. Really weird.

I’ll try to upload a vid. It’s shit quality but you can hear it clear as day. I’d imagine it’ll pick up a couple mph and drop et wince fixed. No reason 10.5’s aren’t attainable on the foot brake.

Technology is amazing. Couple shock clicks and drop tire pressure and a car that hauls my daughter to car shows turns in a respectable 1/4 mile time.
