🔧 BUILD LikeABauce302's 427 SBF Twin Turbo Build. 404 Error: LS Content Not Found

General Information

Since I've been on this site for awhile now, I figured its time to post up the project I've been working on. Some of you may recognize the car. The previous owner raced it quite a bit and ran it in the IMSM series.

Here is my 90 Mustang LX hatchback:

There are probably a few things I'm missing. I bought the car in December of 2009 and it's been a work in progress ever since. It was a solid well built car when I bought it, but it needed some work to make it street driveable.

I've still got some work to go. Before spring I'm going to freshen up the rear end and I'm planning on installing a Holley EFI system. If I have enough time and funds left over, I want to install a roll cage of some sort since I'm planning on running at the drag strip quite a bit.

It's been awhile since I've posted an update over here. I've made some more progress on this car over the last month or so. Most of it has been electrical work. I've finished wiring all of the inputs and outputs to my Holley efi system, along with some other things I re-wired.

Installed inductions solutions solenoids to be used with my NX plate.

Made a new 3.5" intake tube since I no longer need a MAF housing and I couldn't find an aftermarket cold air intake that I liked.

Made a new switch panel using some thin aluminum sheet metal and some 3m carbon fiber wrap (because race car). This panel will cover where the radio and hvac controls used to be.

I used a 12 pin connector to help keep the wiring neat and clean. If for some reason I need to remove the switch panel and get under the dash, it is just one single connection to unplug.

I installed an auxiliary fuse panel in the passenger side kick panel. It is connected to an 80 amp relay which powers the fuse panel only when the key is on. I'm using this to power up my nitrous kit, purge solenoid, line lock, overdrive controller, and a couple other low current circuits.

I also have a new hood that will be going on the car. My previous cowl hood had clearance issues and wouldn't close. The subframe on the bottom side of the hood hit my intake tube and caused the hood to bow. This hood has a wider cowl section and is made specifically for people with tall efi intakes or 351w efi swaps.

My wolfe racecraft roll cage will be delivered sometime this week. Installing the roll cage is the last thing I need to do before spring. Then next winter I plan to do bodywork and have the whole car re-painted.

Car is looking great, the wiring especially.

Sticking with red? The paint looks good, at least on my phone.

Thanks!

Yup, I'm sticking with red. I may do a different shade of red though. Something that pops a little more or maybe has some pearl thrown in. I want something that would be a subtle change from the factory color.

The paint looks good from 10 feet away. I have a couple small rust spots on the rear drivers side quarter that need to be fixed, the cowl is smashed in, and I have a replacement hatch that i want to install. Since all of those areas will be getting paint, it's probably better to just paint the whole car. I'll be half way there already.

It's been awhile since I've updated here. Progress has been moving along slow, but steadily as I have time to work on the car. I'm to the point now where the car is 99.9% finished.

Towards the end of winter I had an 8.50 roll cage installed and some chassis work done.

Once the roll cage was painted, I installed my trans temp gauge and wide band on the A-pillar bar.

Picked up a new bottle and bottle bracket.
20160513_215014.jpg

Welded some angle iron brackets across the spare tire well so I have something solid to mount the bottle to. This area will have a cover over the spare tire well and carpeting re-installed.

Now that all welding and painting work is complete, this past weekend began re-installing the interior.

Now that the interior is close to complete, I re-directed my attention to the bottom side of the car. I sprayed a layer of undercoating over any bare metal from where I had some welding work done. I also re-installed the exhaust so I don't annoy my neighbors with open headers lol. I may switch up the exhaust, but for now I just needed to quiet the car down.

I still have some minor details to take care of. In the next week or two I'll be replacing the stock fuel lines with flexible -AN lines. I'll also be bending and flaring a new brake line to run along the passenger side. Right now the lines are pulled loose because they interfere with the outriggers welded through the floor for the roll cage. The interior also needs some finishing. I have to re-install a few pieces still and modify the dash speaker grills so I can re-install them where the roll cage passes through the dash.

Hey Matt, was the ole 88' put out to pasture ?

I still have it actually. I fired it up this past weekend. I've been trying to get the 90 wrapped up so I can begin digging into the 88.

The plan for the 88 is just to do bodywork and keep things pretty basic. I want that car to be a nice cruiser. Since the 90 has gotten too far away from a comfortable street car, I want a fox that I can cruise anywhere.

If the weather is decent this weekend, I'll probably pull the 88 out of the garage for an oil change and drive it a little bit.

Update time. I've been pretty busy over the last couple months, but have been making it a priority to find a couple hours each week to get some work done on the car.

Since my through the floor subframe connectors interfered with my stock fuel lines, I ended up re-plumbing the fuel system with stainless braided hose and -AN fittings.

I also did my best to re-bend the brake line to contour the bottom side of the car, but I'll probably end up completely bending and flaring a new brake line for it at some point. It's good enough for now though, just not up to my standards. Note to self...don't use stainless brake line again. It sucks to bend and flare.

I also finished a few smaller tasks that aren't exciting enough for pictures, but needed to be finished anyhow. I re-wired the alternator charging circuit so that the alternator and battery are both cut off when the kill switch is pushed. I also had to put a smaller pulley on the alternator to bring charging amps up at idle.

With wiring 100% complete, I finished putting the remaining pieces of the interior back together. I still have to put the passenger side safety harness in, but that won't take any more than a few minutes.

Since I've always had issues with the rear ride height when driving on the street, I swapped out the cut Moroso drag springs for a pair of Team Z springs. At the same time I installed a pair of QA1 single adjustable shocks. I'm hoping now I no longer have issues with the rear end sagging when I have a full tank of gas.

And here is an underhood shot. Other than having to swap out my valve covers for a pair with -AN fittings welded on and needing to install my breather tank, everything under the hood is finished.

I'm hoping to get the car to the track still this season. The last thing to do before I start driving it is get the front suspension aligned. Right now it's way out of whack from when I swapped the front spindles for the sn95 brake conversion and installed caster/camber plates.

Last weekend I had this car out of the garage and gave it a much needed exterior detail. The paint has plenty of scratches and flaws that are to be expected on a 26 year old car, but it still shines nice and bright after a good cleanup.

A wash, claybar, single stage polish with Chemical Guys V36, and a coat of Pinnacle Souveran wax really brought the factory paint back to life.

Then this week I finally got insurance back on the car and couldn't resist taking it out for a short drive around the neighborhood. Here is a video of it leaving the driveway under its own power for the first time in over 2 years. I need to play with the tune a little bit and adjust the fuel table at startup. It runs too rich and sometimes stalls until it's up to operating temp. Once warmed up, the car runs great. I love the Holley EFI system so far.

I still have some work to go before I make a pass at the drag strip, but it should be ready very soon. I plan to get at least one or two track outings in before the season is over. I want to get some baseline data before winter to help me figure out what I need to adjust or improve for next season.
