I was talking to someone I work with about Gps recovery devices for cars and trailers. His dad has a very nice old Vette and he had buddies that have nice race cars and trailers. I had mentioned a GPS device Incase something we’re to happen. Unfortunately, it seems more and more you see stories of someone’s truck, trailer, and car being snatched.

So I’m wondering, what’s out there and what’s best?

I looked at LoJack. They have 2 systems. One for $700 and the other is $1000 with no monthly fee after that. Then there are small cheap devices on amazon, but they have to have cell coverage to work and require a monthly fee.

Tagging along. Want to look into a setup that is an alarm and GPS as well in case anything happens once my car is done.

After my buddies Evo was stolen I'm a little paranoid about it.

I thought there was another one that looked good when I looked into it after my buddies car was stolen, just cant remember it.

I had LoJack back in the day. Didn't know they still existed. :D

I think the other option at the time (Not sure if it still is), was Teletrac.

The Teletrac had the advantage of being able to be tracked at all times. The LoJack was only tracked once the owner called in and said the vehicle was stolen. So that gave theives at least some head start. Most would steal a vehicle, put it in an abandoned lot, then let it sit for a day or two just in case the vehicle had LoJack.

Isn't there some form of basic OnStar kit that can be installed on any vehicle?

I’m not sure about the on star kit. I’ll look into that.

I was looking at Viper when I was being overly paranoid about my Mustang being stolen while we're temporarily living in an apartment. It's been 2+ months and nobody has even looked at my bucket.

I believe the Viper unit will notify you when the car moves.

I ended up not moving forward with it. Though I would like to install a remote start system in the Infiniti for the winters in the work parking lot.

Looked back to when my buddies car was stolen and the one I was thinking of was the Escort Entourage CIS, but it has since been discontinued.

Looks like the tracking technology has come WAY down in price now.

Also read of someone just getting a cheap phone and data plan and hiding that in the car on a charger...

That’s what they’re doing for this weekend. Only problem is you need a cell service to find it.
Install google maps with a google email account. Turn on all the location and data tracking, turn on wifi and location on high. Then they will track it for you and you just need to login on google.

They use cell, gps, wifi, bluetooth all for data tracking. Just need a data plan. Anyone who takes the car will eventually hit wifi or cell service for sure. Its very hard to avoid service areas.

I've been wanting a GPS tracker for my car but haven't done enough research. Are they easy to hide while still getting good signal or is there an antenna that needs to have a clear path to the sky / daylight?

They have very small dimension from what Im seeing. Should be easy to bury in the dash or someplace not easily found/defeated.

The bonus with the cell phone is a battery. Thieves will cut power to the car. Which means most trackers go dead as they rely on the car's battery. A cell phone will use its battery to add additional tracking time.

I know guys were having trailers and cars stolen more and more a couple years ago. Many went the route of a used cell phone hidden in them.

The trackers I’m looking at have a battery backup as well now. Definitely good to have for sure!
