Are you referring to the disc shaped object in the front which some years had some didn't? I never knew wtf the difference is between the two...

It's a pulsation damper it's there to try to minimize the pressure fluctuations as each injector fires intern and causes pressure waves through the system very similar to a water hammer in house plumbing.
Seems around 00ish gm found there was a issue as pressure fluctuations caused injectors not to dispense the proper amount of fuel. The later 04 and newer deadhead fuel systems have even larger surface area pulsation dampers because they are even more susceptible than a return line system.
