While he may have ceded the “Tonight Show” to Conan O’Brien, Jay Leno will never give up his mantle of being one of the most impressive celebrity car enthusiasts.

How impressive, you ask?

Leno creates his own spare parts for rare, old cars using a 3D printer. He described the process for Popular Mechanics, but here’s the gist of how it works: Leno scans the old part using a NextEngine 3D Scanner, which takes about 20 minutes at a resolution of 160,000 dots per inch.

This creates a 3D model, which he can then print in plastic with a Dimension 3D Printer in roughly three hours. At that point, he can use the plastic model to create a mold that can be used to build the car piece in metal.

Pretty nifty, right? He should put that much time and effort into his monologue.

http://firevortex.net/ Some kinda addon to make forum browsing easier.

I'm trying to figure out why whenever I click on links posted on a forum, such as cars.com , ebay, blogs etc...) The link tries to redirect to http://jbrlsr.com/?aid=5336121816&bid=3323800&url= and then the actual URL the link was for, however its always a 404 error. To make it even worse this only happens randomly, and the firevortex addon is the only thing I can find that makes any reference to http://jbrlsr.com

:dunno:

i wonder what the biggest stuff he can make is

Depends on what particular RP machine they're using.

our formula SAE team here at school had their entire intake manifold done on a rapid prototype machine like this...It would have taken at least a foot and a half cube of space in the machine to fit it in there, if not 2 feet all around. There are pretty big ones out there that can make some pretty amazing shit.
