Any way to legally avoid it. I'm paying $100 every year and not driving the car. Any way to suspend the registration 'til the car is back on the road? I searched the Secretary of State website and see nothing.

If you skip a few years, don't you have to pay for years that went unpaid unless you "sell" it?
Hmm i didnt have to do that? Had same issue, car wasent being driven so i didnt register it. When it got fixed, i went in to register, paid the $100 and the only difference was they gave me a new plate

Just had this happen. If its 2 years and one day expired you can get a new plate. 2 years or less and you have to pay the 2 years back. At least I got the same number just a new plate.
.
That what must have happened to me.
I let a truck sit for a while and they forced me to back pay.
I had another truck that sat for several years, like 5-7 and I only paid the current year.
.
Yeah, that's how the GTA was. I parked it for a few years and never did the registration.
Course, now with the vanity plates its $164 to plate it.
